Assembly Faces Budget Cliffhanger

Lawmakers continued to bicker Tuesday over the government's budget for fiscal 2001.

Threatening the passage of the101-trillion-won ($85 billion) budget is the opposition Grand National Party's demand for an eight trillion won cut.

On Monday of last week the two camps opened the month-long extra session of the National Assembly to pass the budget for fiscal 2001, and after a week's dispute had agreed to pass the budget by Wednesday

The opposition party's main demand is for a reduction of 320 billion won in the budget of the National Intelligence Service, and 200 billion won off government's program to provide jobs for an estimated 800,000 jobless.
