Clinton's North Trip Decision Imminent

The White House said Tuesday that U.S. President Bill Clinton would decide this week whether to visit North Korea before his term ends in January.

"We will make an assessment whether or not to travel to North Korea before the holdiay, sometime before the Christmas holiday," said Jake Siewert, the presidential spokesman. "The President will make that decision based on national interests and his assessment of the usefulness of such a trip."

Mr. Clinton had hoped to follow Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Pyongyang.

However, prospects of a visit dimmed with talks in October, when talks between the U.S. and North Korea failed to bridge differences over the North's missile program.
