Seoul Markets Gain On New York Trend

Seoul stocks ended higher Monday on purchases by foreign investors after Wall Street's rally on Friday. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index gained 8.01 points, or 1.49 percent, to close at 545.98.

Foreign investors bought both on the spot and futures market, while institutional investors unloaded their holdings. Trade volume rose to 433 million shares valued at 1.85 trillion won ($1.42 billion).

Construction shares were buoyant after the government said Sunday it would lift development restrictions in Cheju city in June. Sam Bu Construction, Poong-Lim Industrial and Shinsung Corp. surged by the daily limit of 15 percent.

Semiconductor shares were strong as their Nasdaq counterparts gained and world chip prices moved upward.

Samsung Electronics rose 0.93 percent to 217,000 won. Hyundai Electronics Industries soared by the daily limit, ending at 3,490 won. Anam Semiconductor hit the daily ceiling for the second consecutive trading day, closing at 4,780 won.

Pohang Iron & Steel Co. was up 1.11 percent to 91,000 won. Korea Electric Power Corp. added 1.24 percent, finishing at 20,450 won. Korea Telecom jumped 4.68 percent to 58,200 won. Advancing issues led decliners 526 to 390. Twenty-nine shares rose by the daily limit and 13 fell the limit.

The Kosdaq market also rallied Monday after fluctuating within a narrow range of 1 percent through last week. The composite index closed at 72.77, up 2.16 points or 3.06 percent.

But trade volume was still thin at 335 million shares with a value of 1.45 trillion won. Foreign and institutional investors bought; individuals sold.

Large-cap telecommunication and dot-com shares were generally strong. KT Freetel climbed 3.57 percent to 40,600 won. KT M.Com was up 4.34 percent to 9,860 won. LG TeleCom soared by the daily limit of 12 percent, ending at 4,720 won. Serome Technology, Daum Communications and Haansoft added 2 to 4 percent. Gaining issues overwhelmed losers 410 to 151. Forty shares jumped by the daily limit and 14 fell by the limit.
