Rail service to be upgraded this year

Jan 03,2003
Construction of the Seolleung-Suseo section of the Bundang subway line will be completed within the first half of this year, the Ministry of Planning and Budget said yesterday. The Seolleung-Suseo section will connect with the currently operating Suseo-Ori line, making commutes to southern Seoul easier for Bundang area residents.

The ministry announced the construction of the subway along with a host of other railroad projects included in the 171.2 billion won ($143.5 million) railroad construction budget for this year.

An electric railroad connecting Cheonan, South Chungcheong province to Jochiwon, North Chungcheong province, will be completed by the second half of the year, the ministry said.

Work to expand four single-track lines will also start this year. A second set of tracks will be added to allow two-way traffic on the Ulsan-Pohang line, Jinju-Gwangyang line, Wonju-Jecheon line and Sosa-Jeongwang line.

A second track will also be added to the Songjeong-Mokpo section of the Honam line, which connects the Daejeon and Mokpo, South Jeolla province. Work to add a second track to the line began in 1968, and will finally be completed this year, the ministry said.

Once the Jochiwon-Jecheon and Cheonan-Jochiwon sections are complete this year, the Gyeongbu line, Chungbuk line and Jungang line will be linked in a circuit. The linking of the lines is expected to significantly improve rail cargo traffic in the Gyeonggi, Gangwon and North Chungcheong regions.
