China detains group of defectors, activists

Chinese authorities have detained a group of North Korean defectors and activists from South Korea and Japan, the South Korean Consulate-General in Shanghai said yesterday.
Kim Seung-jin, 43, a freelance cameraman, Geum Myeong-seok, a freelance journalist, and Kim Gi-ju, an activist based in Japan, are reportedly among those being held. Nine other detainees were North Korean defectors.
“We were told that China’s public security authorities detained three South Koreans,” the mission said. “We have asked to be allowed to interview them.”
Japan’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday that Fumiyaki Yamada, an assistant professor of Osaka University and a leader of a Japanese activist group, has been detained in China since Friday on charges of taking part in smuggling North Koreans into China.
