Forum discusses IT in Asia

The East Asian Common Space Forum 2003, a three-day international forum to discuss ways to establish a peaceful community in East Asia, opened at the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Hotel yesterday. More than 300 domestic and international participants will discuss the current forum’s agenda, “Information Technology Civilization in East Asia” and how information technology has transformed East Asian society. They will also talk about establishing private networks and having a unified voice of Asian countries. “Free exchange of opinions and an establishment of common ground have become possible due to information technology,” said Mike Moore, the former director-general of the World Trade Organization. “Conferring on plans to create a political, economic, social and cultural community in Korea, an information technology leader, is especially meaningful.” East Asian Common Space (EACOS), a public corporation registered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, was launched early this year in a bid to form networks of opinion leaders in East Asian countries. Among the participants are Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends; Maurice Strong, a senior adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan; Eisuke Sakakibara, former vice finance minister of Japan, and Kim Sang-woo, secretary-general, secretariat of EACOS. by Choi Hyung-kyu
