Police say G.I. tried to commit murder

Police investigators have recommended that a U.S. soldier who stabbed a Korean national last weekend in Sinchon be charged with attempted murder.
Officers at Seodaemun Police Station questioned Private First Class John Christopher Humphreys, yesterday in an effort to establish intent in the incident. A police investigator said, “We believe the suspect could have predicted the results of his actions.”
Private Humphreys reportedly admitted placing a knife at the victim’s throat, but denied through his lawyer any intention to murder the man.
If an arrest warrant is issued, jurisdiction will pass to Korean courts, in accordance with the Status of Forces Agreement, which governs U.S. forces here. Under the agreement, Korean authorities are allowed to investigate suspects in cases of major felonies.
