Korean actor wows Japan

TOKYO ― More than 3,000 fans waited Sunday at Narita International Airport to see a South Korean actor walk out the airport gates. But it was not Bae Yong-joon - known to his Japanese fans as “Yonsama” - this time. It was a younger heartthrob with bigger biceps named Kwon Sang-woo, who already gained a nickname here among the Japanese fans as “Sansama.”
Mr. Kwon, 28, visited Japan to promote a Korean television drama called “Steps in Paradise,” a TV series filmed last year starring Mr. Kwon and Choi Ji-woo, a well known actress in Japan because she starred with Mr. Bae in “Winter Sonata.”
Seeing thousands of female fans screaming and sobbing to see Mr. Kwon at the airport on Sunday, Japanese media showed plenty of effort to report what they could.
Media reports commented on the age range of female fans of Mr. Bae and Mr. Kwon. They said Mr. Bae’s fans were around 46 years old on average, while Mr. Kwon’s fans are around 35.
Mr. Kwon said he was very impressed by all the attention.
“Frankly, I was worried that I wouldn’t be welcomed as much as ‘Yonsama’,” he said shyly.
