Ministry homepage hit by cyber attack

Mar 20,2005
A Foreign Ministry official said yesterday that the ministry has issued warnings to South Korean overseas missions following cyber attacks apparently originating from Japanese right wing groups.
The warning was issued after the Foreign Ministry’s home page came under attack from a Japanese site, suspected of being operated by a right wing Japanese organization. The official said the attack was designed to make the ministry’s homepage inaccessible to Internet users.
The attack comes amid rising tension between South Korea and Japan regarding the Tokto islands, known in Japan as Takeshima. The Shimane prefecture in Japan passed a bill last week establishing Feb. 22, as “Takeshima Day.” Seoul asked Tokyo to take immediate measures to reverse the actiion, warning that ties between the two countries could suffer.
