Cornell geneticist to be honored by foundation

The Kumho Cultural Foundation has chosen Steven Tanksley, a professor of plant breeding and biometry at Cornell University, as this year’s winner of the Kumho Science International Award.
Mr. Tanksley was the first to create genetic maps for major crops such as tomatoes and rice plants, knowledge that will help to grow crops with disease-resistance genes. He was also recognized for his contributions in the field of comparative genomics and breeding methodologies based on molecular marker technology.
He will be given a certificate and a grant of $30,000 at a ceremony June 3 at the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul.
