‘Real name system’ wins online support
In unscientific polls conducted by Internet portal sites, there has been strong support for the idea of requiring real names to be used on some Web sites. As of yesterday, a Yahoo! Korea poll that had been ongoing since June 15 found that 80 percent of participants welcomed what has been called the “real name system.” Only 18 percent said they were against it; two percent said they did not know. A poll at the Naver portal site found 65.4-percent support and 32.3-percent opposition. An apparent surge in cases of online harassment has prompted calls for real-name registration to be required at some sites. An official at the Ministry of Information and Communication interpreted the results by speculating that netizens are especially aware of the harm that online harassment can cause.
