Subscriptions stopped over sexy serial

The Blue House stopped subscribing to the evening newspaper Munhwa Ilbo because of its sexually suggestive serial novel, the presidential spokesman Yoon Tae-young said yesterday.
Munhwa Ilbo confirmed that the Blue House canceled 57 subscriptions, leaving the publicity-related bureaus as the only subscribers.
The novel at issue is titled “Gangan Namja” by Lee Won-ho, which the newspaper has published since January 2002.
The novel is about the adventures of a divorced car salesman. Due to the lines that suggest sexual intercourse, the novel has received three official and 21 unofficial non-punitive warnings from the Korea Press Ethics Foundation.
Some politicians, however, speculated that the Blue House decided to end the subscription due to the newspaper’s critical tone of the administration. The leading opposition Grand National Party defined it as a “new type of gag on the press.”
The Grand National Party’s spokeswoman, Na Kyung-won, said the Blue House sees the Munhwa Ilbo as an “eyesore” for its critical tone against the administration.
Mr. Yoon of the Blue House denied such speculation yesterday, saying, “The leading secretaries made the decision after listening to the opinions of their staff members, who took issue with the serial novel.”
