Stars of His Voice found roles with meaning

Sul Kyung-gu and Kim Nam-joo met with reporters last Thursday prior to the opening of Director Park Jin-Pyo’s upcoming film “His Voice.” The press conference took place at a theater in Apgujeong, near where the actual kidnap occurred 16 years ago.

Q: Mr. Sul, you did quite a job playing an anchor in the movie. Was there a specific role model you had in mind, such as anchors Eom Gi-yeong or Sohn Seok-hui?
Sul: I wouldn’t have dared impersonate them. (laughs) It was just my Sul Kyung-gu way of anchoring the show. The crew thought it was funny whenever I tried to wear the solemn face of an anchor.
You seemed to have lost a lot of weight.
Sul: I didn’t intend to, but I lost so much during the filming. Before fiming began I weighed 80 kilograms (176 pounds) and my pants were tight. I was looking good. Now, my buttocks are gone.
Ms. Kim, this is your first film in five years. Was there a reason why you chose this project in particular as a comeback opportunity?
Kim: First of all, I had confidence in the director. Secondly, the intention of the film, to end kidnappings, was good.
You have been playing a teary mother of a lost child for few months.
Kim: As the mother of a child in real life, I had a harsh time living as Oh Ji-Seon, my character. Once, I had my little girl on my back, looking down the Han river and I felt my eyes welling up with tears.
What was the hardest part?
Kim: The director told me to control my emotions and hold myself in check.
Sul: Understanding and performing my character properly as a cool-headed anchor but also a vulnerable father.
