Electric trains connecting Seoul with Incheon International Airport began service yesterday on the first phase of the project, a 40-kilometer (25 miles) long section.
Passengers bound for Incheon Airport can catch the train at Gyeyang Station on the Incheon Subway Line No. 1 and at Gimpo Airport Station on the Seoul Subway Line No. 5.
It takes just 33 minutes for a commuter train to run from Gimpo Airport Station to Incheon International Airport station and the fare is 3,100 won ($3.30). It takes 28 minutes for an express train on the same section at a cost of 7,900 won.
Until the train system, named AREX, launched the service, there was only road transportation to connect Seoul and Incheon Airport, which sits on an island.
Second phase construction will be completed in 2009 and will connect the train with Seoul Station. At that time, outbound passengers also will be able to check in their luggage and complete their ticketing at Seoul Station.
