Old women divers and the deep sea

Kang Mi-saeng both loves and fears the texture of the seawater that seeps into her wetsuit. Sometimes it feels soft and serene like a sleeping baby. At other times it is like a raging storm on the ocean.
Even though Kang, 52, has been diving for abalone and sea urchins for the past three decades, her sentiments remain the same.

강미생씨는 잠수복으로 스며드는 바닷물의 감촉을 사랑하지만 동시에 두려워 한다. 어떨 때는 잠든 아이 처럼 부드럽고 고요하게 느껴진다. 그러나 때로는 먼 바의 폭풍처럼 분노하기도 한다.
52세로 벌써 30년 간 전복과 성게 등을 따기 위해 바닷 속을 드나들었던 강씨지만 바닷물에 대한 외경심은 여전하다.

All she can do is pray for safety, hold her breath and dive for the shellfish that she’ll later sell to buy food for her family. After so many years working deep underwater, Kang suffers from headaches and earaches due to decompression sickness, which many long-term divers experience.

그녀가 할 수 있는 일은 그저 안전을 위해 기도하고 숨을 깊게 들이 쉰 뒤 그녀의 가족을 먹여 살릴 양식의 밑천이 될 조개를 따러 바다 속으로 들어가는 것 뿐이다. 오랜 세월을 깊은 바다 속에서 일한 덕에 강씨는 두통과 귀의 통증으로 고생한다. 바닷물 속에 들어갔다 나올 때 생기는 감압 현상 때문인데 해녀 생활을 오래 한 사람들이 대부분 앓는 병이다.

It’s the sea that gave her the condition, but it is also the sea that comforts her.
“My headaches vanish when I dive into the sea,” Kang said, her face tanned and deeply etched with wrinkles. “The sea is both my home and my mother,” she said.

바다는 그녀에게 이런 질병을 줬지만, 그녀를 위로해 주는 것도 역시 바다다.
햇볕에 그을리고 주름살이 깊이 패인 얼굴의 강씨는 “바다 속으로 들어가면 두통도 사라진다”며 “바다는 내게 집이나 어머니와 같다”고 말했다.

Koreans call women divers like Kang haenyeo, the women of the sea.
When Kang submerges into her watery second home, she doesn’t need cutting-edge technology. Like those who dived before her, Kang faces the sea with nothing more than a simple wetsuit, fins and a face mask. In her hands she clutches the tools that she uses to gather shellfish, a buoy made from a gourd and a fishnet basket to carry her booty from the seabed.

한국인들은 강씨 같은 여성 잠수부들을 해녀, 즉 바다의 여인이라고 부른다.
강씨는 물로 가득한 자신의 두 번 째 집으로 들어갈 때 첨단 기술 따위는 필요치 않다. 과거의 해녀들이 그랬던 것 처럼 그녀는 간단한 잠수복과 잠수용 오리발, 마스크 만으로 바다와 맞선다. 손에는 조개 따위를 채취할 때 쓰는 도구와 호리병 박 따위로 만든 부표, 그리고 바다 밑바닥에서 캐낸 것들을 넣을 어망을 꽉 쥐고 있다.

And there’s no need for the oxygen tanks that divers usually carry on their backs. Kang can hold her breath for a remarkable 10 minutes when underwater.
Kang shrugs off questions about whether the work is too physically demanding. Thirty years ago the haenyeo only wore thin cotton wetsuits. The rubber wetsuit Kang wears would be considered a luxury now by the women divers who worked the Jeju waters before her.

보통 잠수부들이 등 뒤에 매는 산소 탱크 따위는 필요없다. 강씨는 물 속에서 무려 10분 동안이나 숨을 참을 수 있다. 강씨는 바닷 속 일이 육체적으로 너무 힘든 것 아니냐는 질문에 어깨를 으쓱했다. 30년 전만 해도 해녀들은 면으로 된 잠수복 하나만 입었을 뿐이다. 강씨가 지금 입고 있는 것 같은 고무 재질의 잠수복은 그녀보다 먼저 바다를 드나들던 해녀들에게는 사치품으로 여겨졌다.

It’s no wonder that Kang and her fellow haenyeo take great pride in continuing a tradition started by women divers of the past.
Choa Hae-gyung, who studied the haenyeo for her Ph.D., is equally in awe of the women divers and their incredible spirit.
“A haenyeo is the symbol of the tenacious character of Jeju women, and they are cultural assets that deserve protection,” Choa said.

강씨와 동료 해녀들이 자신의 조상들이 해 오던 전통을 이어가고 있는 것에 대해 느끼는 강렬한 자부심도 어찌 보면 당연한 일이다.
해녀 연구로 박사 학위를 받은 좌혜경씨 역시 해녀들과 그들의 믿을 수 없는 정신력에 대해 경외감을 갖고 있다.
좌씨는 “해녀는 제주 여성의 강인한 성격을 대표하며, 마땅히 보호 받아야 할 문화적 자산이기도 하다”고 말했다.

Jeju Island has an old saying: “When you have a baby girl, butcher a pig and throw a party. When you have a baby boy, just kick him hard in the butt.”
Such a saying seems out of place in the male-dominated Confucian tradition. But it accurately reflects the importance of a woman as the backbone of the Jeju family.

제주도에는 이런 속담이 있다.
“딸을 낳으면 돼지를 잡아 큰 잔치를 벌여라. 아들을 낳으면 엉덩이를 찰싹 때려줘라”
이런 속담은 남성 위주의 유교 사회에서는 믿어지지 않는 것이다. 하지만 이것이야말로 제주도 사람들의 가정 생활을 든든하데 뒷받침했던 여성의 중요성을 정확하게 보여준다.
