S. Korean oil tanker hijacked by Somali pirates

A South Korean oil tanker carrying five South Korean crew members and 19 Filipinos was apparently hijacked in the Indian Ocean by Somali pirates on Sunday, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

The ministry announced that the 300,000-ton ship, the Samho Dream, which was on its way from Iraq to the U.S. state of Louisiana, is
"believed to have been seized by Somali pirates at around 4:10 p.m. (Seoul time) Sunday." The hijacking happened in waters about 1,500km
southeast of the Gulf of Aden, where a South Korean Navy destroyer is operating to help the global efforts to fight piracy there, it said.

The ship has a total of 24 crew -- five South Koreans and 19 Filipinos, it added.

The ministry said it held an emergency meeting to discuss related measures.

"First of all, the government is trying to check the situation of the ship presumed to have been hijacked and confirm the safety of the crew," it said in a press release.

It said that the ship's owner, Samho Shipping Co., will do its best to win the early release of the vessel and crew and that the government
will provide every possible means of support.

The waters near the East African nation are notorious for pirates who seek huge amounts of ransom for seized ships.

In a previous case involving South Koreans, pirates seized a Japanese-flagged freighter in November 2008, holding captive five South Korean and 18 Filipino crew. All of them were released unharmed after three months of negotiations over ransom. The amount of ransom paid was not disclosed.

South Korea dispatched a 4,500-ton destroyer last year to the Somali waters to protect commercial vessels there. [Yonhap]

삼호해운 소속의 '삼호 드림호(유조선)' 가 이라크에서 미국 루이지애나로 항해하던 도중 4일 오후 4시10분(한국시간) 인도양(북위 08˚21´, 동경 65˚00´) 에서 소말리아 해적에게 피랍된 것으로 추정된다고 외교통상부가 밝혔다. 피랍 선박은 30만t급(적재톤수) 원유 운반선이며, 한국인 5명, 필리핀인 19명 등 총 24명이 탑승한 것으로 알려졌다.

피랍 지점은 청해부대(충무공 이순신함)의 작전해역인 아덴만 해역으로부터 동남쪽으로 1500Km 정도 떨어진 지점으로 전해졌다. 이와 관련, 정부는 외교통상부 재외동포영사 대사를 본부장으로 '삼호 드림호 피랍 대책본부'를 설치하고 4일 오후 7시30분 관계부처 대책회의를 가졌다.

현재 정부는 피랍 추정 선박의 상황 및 선원의 안전여부를 확인 중이다. 그러나 피랍사건의 특성을 감안, 5명의 신원은 공개하지 않기로 했다. 국토해양부는 최근 소말리아 해적이 원양해역 선박에 대한 피랍 시도가 빈번해 인도양 인근 원양해역을 운항중인 우리 선박들에게 해적 피랍 가능성에 대해 더욱 유의해 줄 것을 당부했다.
