Five of Samsung Electronics’ products, including an eco-friendly hard drive, have been recognized for their excellent materials by a prestigious product design award.

According to the Korean company yesterday, its external hard disk drive, two-door refrigerator, full touch-screen mobile phone, compact digital camera and laser printer toner have been awarded iF Material Awards given out by Hanover-based International Forum Design (iF).

The award recognizes companies whose materials choice contributed to good, sustainable product design.

A total of 42 products received the award this year.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest electronics company by revenue after California-based Hewlett-Packard, won the most iF Material Awards this year.

“We try to set ourselves apart from our competitors by studying the usage of color, materials and patterns for our products,” said Yoon Ji-hong, an executive director at Samsung’s design management center.

“In particular we use materials as a unique design element and for reducing environmental damage and enhancing performance.”

Last week, three of Germany’s major AV professional magazines - Heimkino, VideoHomeVision and Audiovision - gave awards to Samsung’s Full HD 3-D LED TV 7700.
