Kospi hits a 22-month high as won strengthens
The Kospi index hit a 22-month high yesterday, while the local currency strengthened to a 19-month high as investor sentiment was buoyed by Greece’s request for emergency aid and United States data showing further economic recovery. Strong foreign buying also boosted the market Monday.According to analysts from local securities firms yesterday, the Kospi index reached an annual high of 1,752.20, up 15.17 points from the previous trading day last Friday, the strongest level since June 18, 2008 (1,774.13), mostly due to a rise in the U.S. stock market in its latest trading session.
“The rise in the Kospi market was mainly driven by the U.S. stock market, where investors’ expectations have grown after news that cash-strapped Greece requested emergency aid from the EU and IMF,” said Choi Jae-sik, a strategist with Daishin Securities. Strong foreign buying in the stock market was also identified as a reason for the surge. “Foreign investors have been buying stocks in the local market because they feel the Korean market has investment merit,” said Shim Jae-yup, a strategist with Meritz Securities.
On Friday, the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that new home sales increased nearly 27 percent in March compared to the previous month, which was also 24 percent higher than a year earlier.
“The Korean market will likely continue its strong performance for a while but some variables may be seen around mid-May when Samsung Life Insurance goes public and Greek debt reaches maturity,” said Choi from Daishin Securities.
Meanwhile, the local currency gained for the first time in three days to close at 1,104.10 won against the greenback, the strongest level since Sept. 12, 2008, when it was 1,109.1 won against the U.S. dollar.

코스피 지수가 상승세로 거래를 마감했다.
장 초반 연고점을 새로 쓴 코스피 지수는 오후 들어 장중 내내 약세를 지속하다 장 막판 재차 반등에 나서면서 거래를 마쳤다.

코스피 지수는 장 초반 1747.38선까지 올라서며 연중 최고치를 기록한 것은 물론 지난 2008년 6월 이후 22개월여만에 최고치로 올라섰다.
하지만 원ㆍ달러 환율 하락에 따른 수출주의 부담이 증시의 발목을 잡았다.
