Oh’s record of scaling 14 summits fake: panel

A panel of veteran climbers organized by the Korean Alpine Federation added to the controversy surrounding Oh Eun-sun’s claim to have reached all 14 eight-thousanders by releasaing a statement yesterday that they did not believe Oh reached the summit of Kangchenjunga in May of 2009.

The KAF’s panel consisting of veteran climbers who had reached the summit of Kangchengjunga included Um Hong-gil, Park Young-seok, Han Wang-yong and three others.

“The mountainscape features found in the photo in which Oh claimed to have taken at the summit of Kangchenjunga are not the recognizable features of the summit,” the veteran climbers were quoted as saying in a released statement.

Oh claimed to have successfully conquered all 14 eight-thousanders or summits that rise more than 8,000-meters (26,247 feet) above sea level by reaching the summit of Annapurna, the 10th-highest peak in the world on April 27.

Oh’s feat of first female to summit all 14 peaks was not without controversy as one of Oh’s rivals, Edurne Pasaban of Spain challenged Oh’s claim. Oh’s ascent of Kangchengjunga was recorded as “disputed” in The Himalayan Database run by Elizabeth Hawley.

The controversy was reignited when an investigative news program on SBS aired a show recently with new allegations conflicting Oh’s claims.

“The panel consisted of those who had been skeptical of the feat,” Oh was quoted as saying in an interview with Yonhap. “It’s just the opinion of the KFA so I don’t know if it can sway the public’s view on the issue.”

대한산악연맹(회장 이인정)이 여성 산악인으로는 세계 최초로 히말라야 8천ｍ급 14좌를 완등했다는 오은선(44) 씨가 지난해 칸첸중가(8천586ｍ) 정상에는 오르지 못한 것으로 보인다고 밝혀 파장이 예상된다.

산악연맹은 26일 오후 서울 송파구 올림픽공원 내 경기단체 회의실에서 칸첸중가를 올랐던 산악인 6명이 참석해 오은선 씨의 등정 관련 자료를 검토한 결과 이런 결론을 도출됐다고 밝혔다.

회의에는 엄홍길(2000년 등정), 박영석(1999년), 한왕용(2002년), 김웅식(2001년), 김재수(2009년), 김창호(2010년) 씨 등이 참석했다.

서성호(2010년) 씨는 개인 사정으로 참석하지 못했으나 회의 중에 전화 통화로 의견을 주고 받았다.

이들은 "오은선 씨가 정상에 올라 찍었다는 사진에 나타난 지형은 칸첸중가 정상에서 찾아볼 수 없다"는데 의견을 같이 했고 작년 말 오은선 씨가직접 설명한 등반 과정도 신빙성이 떨어져 이런 결론을 내리게 됐다고 설명했다.

작년 5월 오 씨에 이어 칸첸중가를 등정한 김재수 씨와 올해 등정한 김창호 씨의 의견이 회의에서 가장 심도있게 청취된 것으로 전해졌다.

사안이 산악계에 미치는 영향이 크다고 판단해 이인정 연맹 회장이 회의를 직접 참관했다.

대한산악연맹이 오은선 씨의 칸첸중가 등정을 믿지 못하겠다고 공개적으로 밝히면서 여성 산악인으로 처음 8천ｍ 고봉 14좌를 모두 올랐다는 기록은 국제적 공인을 받기 어렵게 됐다.
