Kara members sever ties with DSP Media in lawsuit

Four members of girl group Kara have filed a lawsuit against their management group, DSP Media, and announced during a phone call with a legal representative yesterday morning that they are leaving the company.

The plaintiffs are Han Seung-yeon, Goo Ha-ra, Jung Nicole and Kang Ji-young.

The fifth member of the group, Park Gu-ri, is not one of the plaintiffs in the suit.

“The girls tried to make the relationship work but the company repeatedly denied any requests and unilaterally forced tasks upon the members,” said the group’s legal representative, Hong Myung-ho.

The four members have demanded DSP Media forfeit all of its management duties and said they will try to reach an agreement with the company regarding any legal contracts.

Hong said: “We’ve been preparing for this suit for over two months. The four band members have clearly stated their intention of severing all business ties with their management company.”

DSP Media said in a press release immediately after the announcement that they are bewildered and that a misunderstanding formed between the parties.

5인조 걸그룹 카라의 한승연·정니콜·강지영 멤버 3명이 소속사인 DSP미디어를 상대로 전속계약 해지를 통보했다. 법무법인 랜드마크는 19일 “DSP 측에 전속계약을 해지한다는 통보를 했다”고 밝혔다. 박규리(리더)와 구하라는 이번 ‘단체행동’에서 빠졌다. 당초 구하라도 계약해지 통보에 합의했으나, 이날 오후 소속사와 만나 “내용을 제대로 파악하지 못했다”며 입장을 번복했다. 박규리 측도 일부 언론을 통해 “계약 조건에 불만도 없고 DSP를 믿는다”고 밝혔다.

카라는 지난해 일본에서만 25만장 이상의 앨범을 판매하며 신한류를 이끌어온 대표적인 아이돌 그룹이다. TV도쿄 드라마 ‘우라카라’에도 출연하는 등 2007년 데뷔 이후 최고의 전성기를 달리고 있다. 이들의 갑작스런 결정에 지금도 법적 분쟁 중인 동방신기의 전철을 밟는 것 아니냐는 전망이 나오고 있다. 5인조 남성그룹 동방신기는 2009년 박유천·김재중·김준수 멤버 3명이 계약해지를 요구하며 탈퇴했으며, 현재 JYJ라는 별도 팀으로 활동 중이다.
