Gen. Thurman named USFK head

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates yesterday nominated Army Gen. James D. Thurman as commander of U.S. Forces Korea to replace Gen. Walter Sharp, who will retire at the end of his tour.

Thurman has been in charge of the U.S. Army Forces Command since June 2010 and has had extensive combat experience as commander of the 4th Infantry Division in the Gulf War in 1991 and as head of the Multinational Division Baghdad after the Iraqi invasion in 2003.

“General Thurman currently runs the Army’s largest organization, with responsibility for oversight, manning, training and equipping of more than 700,000 soldiers in the continental United States,” Gates said.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Thurman will take leadership of the 28,500 military personnel under USFK from General Sharp, who has been in command since 2008.

A native of Marietta, Oklahoma, Thurman received a bachelor’s degree in history from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, and received a master’s in management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.

He also has served as deputy chief of staff and commanding general of U.S. V Corps in Heidelberg, Germany.

The nomination comes amid North Korean criticism of the current Key Resolve/Foal Eagle joint military exercises being held between the U.S. and South Korea.

“This is part of a series of exercises that go on all the time between U.S. and Republic of Korea forces,” Gates said. “They are part of a program of making sure that we have the capabilities and we have the skills to be able to respond to various contingencies. We’ve seen over the last year provocations by the North that make the importance of these exercises, I think, even more clear.”

걸프·이라크전 지휘

로버트 게이츠(Robert Gates) 미 국방장관은 1일(현지시간) 펜타곤(미 국방부)에서 기자회견을 열어 월터 샤프(Walter Sharp) 한미연합사령관 겸 주한미군사령관 후임으로 제임스 서먼(James Thurman) 육군사령관(대장)을 추천했다고 발표했다.

　서먼 사령관은 버락 오바마(Barack Obama) 대통령의 지명과 상원의 인준청문 절차를 거친 뒤 한국에 부임하게 된다. 2008년 6월에 부임한 샤프 사령관은 퇴임할 것으로 전해졌다.

　게이츠 장관은 “서먼 장군은 미 대륙 내 70만 명 이상의 병사들에 대한 감독·훈련·보급 책임을 맡는 등 육군의 가장 큰 조직을 이끌고 있다”며 “이라크에서 사단장을 지낸 것을 비롯해 전장(戰場) 경험도 상당하다”고 말했다. 오클라호마주 출신인 서먼 사령관은 1975년 이스트 센트럴 대학에서 학군사관후보생(ROTC) 과정을 거쳐 임관했다.

　서먼 사령관은 91년 걸프전 당시 ‘사막의 폭풍’ 작전에 전투부대 장교 신분으로 참가했다. 또 99년 코소보 내전 당시 연합군의 계획 및 정책 담당 책임자로 일한 데 이어 2002년 이라크 전쟁 때는 사단장으로 ‘이라크 자유’ 작전을 지휘했다. 2006년에도 바그다드에 주둔한 다국적군의 연합작전을 책임지는 지휘관으로 일했다.
