Local firms worry about components from Japan

테스트

Korean companies are beginning to worry about the shortage of key components from Japan.

Components account for 59 percent of total imports from Japan, which supplies 25 percent of Korea’s total component imports.

It was initially thought that the earthquake would be disruptive since most of the component suppliers were outside the earthquake zone, while Korean auto and electronics companies have two or three months worth of component stockpiles.

But some key suppliers to Korea have been forced to suspend operations. Renesas Technology, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of semiconductor systems for mobile phones and automotive applications, halted production temporarily at seven of its 22 plants and warned it could be subject to future energy blackout measures.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics each purchase between $100 million to 200 million worth of semiconductors systems for mobile phones from Renesas each year.

“There is no immediate impact, as we have a month’s worth of supply,” said a Samsung official. “But we are closely monitoring the situation on our supply network in preparation for possible setbacks.”

Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductors receive wafer supplies from Japan’s Shin-Etsu Chemical plants in Ibaraki and Fukushima and Sumco’s plant in Yamagata. which have suspended operations.

The two companies have a combined 60 percent share of the global wafer market. Samsung Electronics is also worried about the supply of memory chips from Sony.

Renault Samsung could be affected by suspensions at four Nissan plants, which provide components for the SM7 sedan, including transmissions.
