A boxing beauty: Actress wins title

Actress Lee Si-young shocked fans and experts alike by winning the women’s amateur boxing championship yesterday.
The actress dominated the women’s 48-kilogram final at the 7th National Women’s Rookie Amateur Boxing Championship in Andong, North Gyeongsang, in a 17-0 victory over 16-year-old high school boxer Sung So-mi.
The 28-year-old beauty, famous for roles in television dramas “Boys Over Flowers” (2009) and “Playful Kiss” (2010), won in the third round by a referee stop contest, an amateur boxing rule in which the referee can call the match if the point gap between the two boxers widens by more than 15 points.
Lee got off to a fast start in the first round, using left-handed jabs, hooks and crosses to take an immediate 9-0 lead.
Sung attempted to fight back in the second round but Lee countered her attacks and collected three more points to go up 12-0.
By the third round it was clear Lee would be coasting to victory and captured the title 1 minute and 45 seconds into the two-minute period. Lee even knocked Sung out three times, once in the second round and twice in the third.

“She has a very accurate left punch,” Lee said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency. “She is tall and has long arms, a very good body for boxing.”
Lee, who trained with former World Boxing Association bantamweight champion Hong Soo-hwan, reached the final by beating 17-year-old Shin So-young by a referee decision in the semifinals Wednesday.
Only five boxers participated in this year’s 48-kilogram class, giving Lee an automatic ticket to the semis.
The actress started learning boxing last year when she was cast in the leading role of a drama about a female boxer. Even though production was canceled, Lee maintained her passion for the sport and surprised everyone by winning two lower-tier boxing tournaments in November and February.
In order to prepare for the Amateur Boxing Championship, Lee ran between five and six kilometers (3.7 miles) every morning and spent two hours in the afternoon working on the technical aspects of her punches and movement, said another one of Lee’s coaches, Baek Seung-won.
Although she won the title her talent agency, GnG Production, said boxing won’t take over her acting career.

단막극 주인공으로 처음 껴본 글러브. 단박에 복싱의 매력에 빠졌다. 진지하게 스텝 밟고 주먹 날리고 … 그녀에게 복싱은 이제 취미만이 아니다. 통산 우승 3회, 선수 이시영.
이시영(29)은 배우이면서 복서다. 단순히 ‘취미로 복싱을 즐기는 여배우’가 아니다. 그렇게 부르기엔 실력이 넘친다. 이시영은 17일 안동실내체육관에서 열린 제7회 전국여자신인아마추어 복싱선수권대회 -48㎏급(2분 4라운드) 결승전에 출전, 성소미(16·순천 청암고)를 상대로 3회 RSC(Referee Stop Contest)승을 거두고 우승을 차지했다. 이시영은 -48㎏급 참가자 5명 중 나이가 가장 많다.
이시영의 복싱 대회 우승은 세 번째다. 지난 2010년 2월 제47회 서울 신인 아마추어 복싱전과 같은 해 11월 KBI 전국 생활체육 복싱대회에서도 각각 우승했다. 3회 우승 경력이 말해주듯 이시영은 복싱을 대하는 자세가 사뭇 진지하다. 다이어트나 운동 삼아 복싱을 즐기는 수준을 넘어선 것이다. 그는 우승 후 “연기와 복싱 둘 다 잘할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
이시영이 복싱과 처음 인연을 맺은 것은 지난해다. 여자 복서를 주인공으로 하는 단막극에 캐스팅돼 세계챔피언 출신인 홍수환 관장(스타복싱체육관)에게 복싱을 배우기 시작했다. 비록 드라마는 무산됐지만 복싱의 매력에 빠져 글러브를 벗지 않았다. 그는 ‘복싱을 할수록 빠져든다’고 주변에 말해왔다고 한다. 서글서글하고 활달한 이미지를 갖고 있는 이시영은 링에만 오르면 날카로운 눈매에서 투지가 뿜어져 나왔다.
그럼에도 이시영은 그동안 복싱에 관한 이야기를 꺼내는 것을 조심스러워했다. 자신의 실력에 대한 확신이 없었기 때문이다. 이날 우승 후 이시영은 “그동안 복서로서의 인터뷰를 고사해왔던 건 아직 신인이라 부족한 게 많기 때문”이라고 말했다. 그의 입에서는 ‘신인’이란 표현이 자연스레 나왔다. 빨리 신인티를 벗고 싶기라도 한 듯.
복싱계에서는 이시영의 우승을 행운이 아니라 실력의 결과로 본다. 이날 이시영을 응원하기 위해 경기장을 찾은 홍수환 관장은 ‘선수 이시영’에 대한 자신감을 표현했다. 그는 “이시영이 체력이 정말 좋다”며 “전국체전과 런던 올림픽도 준비할 계획”이라고 말했다.
하지만 이시영이 많은 경기에 나설지는 불투명하다. 이시영의 소속사인 GnG프로덕션의 정광성 차장은 “어디까지나 배우가 본업이며 복싱은 취미일 뿐”이라며 “연기 활동에 차질이 없는 범위에서만 즐기는 것으로 소속사와 협의가 끝났다”고 말했다.
