DAEJEON - The nation was stirred by the news of a student at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) committing suicide on Tuesday. It was the third time this year that a student from KAIST, one of the most prestigious schools in Korea, has taken his life.

On Tuesday, a senior surnamed Jang, 25, jumped from the 12th floor of an apartment building in southern Seoul about 1:30 p.m. Just a week before, on March 20, a sophomore surnamed Kim, 19, was found dead with a note next to him in Suwon, Gyeonggi. And in January, a freshman identified as Cho, 19, was found dead on the school’s campus after taking an overdose of sleeping pills.

KAIST Professor Jeong Jae-seung, 38, made an appeal to students Wednesday on his Twitter page, begging them to “come knock on professors’ doors if college life is that stressful.” He told the JoongAng Ilbo that such a tragedy should never be repeated and expressed his sadness over the losses.

“I am so sorry for those students with lost hope under intolerable stress and too much pressure from the fierce competition at KAIST. I feel so terrible that the school’s inappropriate system of putting penalties on students’ deviations or mistakes could have driven the students over the edge,” said Jeong.

Teachers and experts say that one of the reasons behind the tragic incidents is the system that was introduced at KAIST in 2007 of charging tuition fees if a student falls behind academically or fails to graduate in nine semesters. Before the system was adopted, all students at KAIST attended for free. The system of charging fees for those with lower grades is being criticized as overburdening students.

“The university should listen to the voices of students and come up with fundamental measures to stop these tragic incidents from occurring,” Jeong said. He insisted that KAIST should provide programs to foster better relationships between professors and students.

In response to the tragedies, KAIST has decided to strengthen its sports programs in attempt to help reduce stress. All freshmen will be required to take one sports activity starting next year. Moreover, the university and student council are working to revise the system of keeping students with lower grades from receiving full scholarships. The university may lower the fees that students need to pay. Abolishing the system is not being considered.

Other moves include increasing the number of counselors from four to six and not holding afternoon lectures during the university’s festival week. Currently, KAIST does not allow professors to cancel classes during festival week, which has drawn complaints from students.

A professor who asked to remain anonymous said, however, that these measures are not enough. “The current student support programs should be re-evaluated and supplemented in general,” the professor said.
