A group of Brazilian officials, led by parliamentarian Marco Aurelio Spall Maia, visited Hyundai Rotem’s high-speed railway factory in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, yesterday, to check out the technology that Korea wants to export.

They seemed impressed.

“A consortium of Korean firms including Hyundai Rotem is qualified to be selected as the builder of Brazil’s high-speed railway,” pronounced Maia, speaker of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, after touring around the company’s factory. “The Brazilian government is hoping that Hyundai Rotem will deliver its know-how in building high-speed railways.”

Brazil wants to build a 511-kilometer (317.5 miles) railway to connect Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Campinas, and bidding for the 23 trillion won ($21.1 billion) project begins in July. Korea’s consortium includes Hyundai Rotem, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Rail Network Authority and Korea Railroad. It will be the first Korean bid to build bullet trains for another country, although it has participated in related projects.

Other companies interested in the project are France’s Alstom SA, Germany’s Siemens AG, Japan’s Hitachi Ltd., and Spain’s Patentes Talgo SA. Construction on the line will start in the latter half of this year and is supposed to be completed in 2018.

Hyundai Rotem, an affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group, is the manufacturer of the KTX-Sancheon train, the first locally made high-speed train, which can travel up to 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour). Maia is in Seoul to attend the G-20 Speakers’ Consultation. The three-day parliamentary forum is a follow-up to the G-20 Summit in Seoul last November.

“The visit made by the Brazilian parliamentary members suggested the possibility of Korea’s first overseas exports [in the] high-speed railway [business],” said Lee Min-ho, chief executive of Hyundai Rotem.
