Football probe to focus on players wagering money

The K-League match-fixing scandal grew even larger yesterday when prosecutors said they believe professional football players themselves wagered money on the thrown games after obtaining information of the planned match-fixing.

One player is said to be Pohang Steelers midfielder Kim Jung-kyum, 35, who was kicked off the club for being involved in sports betting. According to the Steelers, Kim told to the club that he wagered his own money through his brother-in-law on a match between his team and Daejeon Citizen FC on April 6, upon hearing about planned match-fixing by a Daejeon player surnamed Kim. Kim is among six footballers from Daejeon Citizen FC arrested last week.

“Prosecutors haven’t summoned Kim for questioning yet but we have decided to cancel the contract with Kim as of June 1, judging that we can’t work together with a player who lacks morality,” the Steelers said on its official Web site.

The club said he had made illicit profits amounting to 20 million won ($18,500) by betting 10 million won on the game. Kim didn’t participate in the game.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are focusing their investigation on more games suspected of being manipulated after acquiring lists of games from Sports Toto, the country’s only licensed sports lottery.

Prosecutors believe brokers and football players illegally wagered money exceeding the maximum individual bet of 100,000 won on Sports Toto. The sports gambling company also puts a 1 billion won limit on the total amount of money that can be bet on each game.

According to prosecutors, both of the April 6 games that are at the center of the scandal - Daejeon Citizen FC vs. Pohang Steelers and Gwangju FC vs. Busan I’Park FC - reached the 1 billion won limit in bets per game.

Prosecutors are investigating other games that exceeded 1 billion won in bets. They suspect six games were manipulated.

Moreover, rumors are spreading among football fans that the country’s amateur university league, called the U-League, is also involved in a separate match-fixing scam.

Calls are being made for investigations involving support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, as well as the Ministry of Justice, prosecutors and police.

Because U-League games are not included in Sports Toto, rumors are circulating that gamblers have created an illegal Web site using overseas servers, where anyone can bet an unlimited amount of money on both K-League and U-League games.

Between 3 million won to 5 million won is said to be the price range to bribe university football players, according to the rumors.

프로축구 승부 조작 사건을 수사 중인 검찰이 스포츠토토에서 고액 베팅이 이뤄진 지난해 경기까지 수사를 확대하고 있다.

4월 6일 진행된 대전시티즌, 광주FC의 ‘러시앤캐시컵 2011’ 두 경기 외에 K-리그 등 다른 경기와 다른 구단 일부 선수가 승부 조작에 연루된 정황이 있기 때문이다. 검찰은 이 과정에서 승부 조작 혐의로 사법처리된 대전시티즌·광주FC 선수(6명 구속, 4명 불구속) 가운데 일부와 다른 4~5개 구단의 10여 명이 승부 조작을 알고 스포츠 토토에 베팅해 배당금을 챙긴 것으로 보고 있다.

2개 이상 경기의 승·무·패를 맞히는 토토(프로토)승부식의 경우 한 경기에 베팅이 10억원 이상 몰리면 고정배당률이 조정되고 발매가 중단된다. 승부 조작 혐의가 있는 4월 6일 대전시티즌-포항스틸러스, 광주FC-부산아이파크 두 경기도 대전·광주가 패하는 쪽에 10억원 이상 몰려 모두 베팅이 차단됐다.

검찰은 이에 따라 스포츠토토 측으로부터 10억원까지 베팅이 몰려 발매가 중단된 지난해와 올해 프로축구 경기자료를 입수해 분석 중이다.

2일 스포츠토토에 따르면 지난해 발매 차단된 국내외 축구·야구·농구 경기는 총 430경기로, 이 가운데 국내 프로축구(컵 대회 및 정규리그)는 43경기다. 올해 발매 차단된 국내 프로축구 경기는 4월 6일 2경기다. 검찰은 지난해 발매 중단된 프로축구 경기 가운데 75회차(9월 16~18일), 86회차(10월 25~27일), 88회차(11월 1~3일) 등을 집중 분석하는 것으로 알려졌다. 승부 조작 가능성과 함께 같은 구단에서 뛰거나 학연으로 얽힌 다른 구단 선수들도 베팅한 혐의가 있어서다.

실제 포항스틸러스 김정겸(35·미드필더·사진) 선수는 승부 조작 혐의로 구속된 고교 후배이자 2009~2010년 포항에서 한솥밥을 먹은 김바우(27·대전시티즌 미드필더) 선수에게서 승부 조작 정보를 얻어 토토에 1000만원을 걸어 2000만원의 배당금을 챙겼다가 1일자로 계약해지됐다. 포항 스틸러스는 2일 “조사 결과 김 선수가 4월 6일 컵 대회에서 본인 돈으로 3자를 통해 베팅한 사실을 확인했다”고 계약해지 이유를 밝혔다.

국민체육진흥법 30조에는 선수·감독·코치 등은 체육진흥투표권을 구매·알선·양도받아선 안 되며, 이를 어기면 1년 이하의 징역이나 500만원 이하의 벌금을 받는다. 승부 조작에 직접 가담하면 5년 이하의 징역이나 2500만원 이하의 벌금을 받는다.
