Reality TV crowns new empress

Ju Min-jeong, a 17-year-old high school student with the nickname “Poppin’ Dance Empress,” has become the winner of the “Korea’s Got Talent” TV audition show.

Choi Sung-bong, a manual laborer who became an international singing sensation, ended his months-long reality show journey in second place on Saturday night.

“There is no secret to how I’ve reached this place,” Ju told reporters after the competition. “I’ve just practiced and practiced, staying up until 5 a.m. on many days.”

Asked how she felt about being a young woman in a dance field dominated by men and about the fact that women rarely win audition shows in Korea, Ju said, “When I’m dancing, I don’t care about the fact that I’m a girl, but I am aware that I have to do better than the boys.”

Ju specializes in popping, a street style used in breakdancing or hip-hop dance. In her final-round performance, Ju wowed viewers with her technique, wearing a glittery gold costume that rippled with every jerk of her body.

“My dream is to open a school for dance,” she told reporters after the show. As the winner, Ju will receive 300 million won ($277,000) and a crossover vehicle, which could go a long way to helping her achieve her dream.

Meanwhile, Choi, 22, who ascended to the top-two position with his powerful baritone, was defeated by Ju.

Dubbed Korea’s “Susan Boyle”, who shot to fame on a British TV talent show, Choi’s episode has hit the headlines of news media at home and abroad, pulling at the heart strings of millions around the world.

Top 10 final qualifiers, comprising singers, dancers, harmonica players and magicians, competed on the stage of the finals show.

The show, which lasted for two and a half hours, was aired live on the host cable TV channel and YouTube and began at 11 p.m. in an apparent bid to attract more attention from overseas viewers.

“I am grateful to all who have helped me make it to this position. I will show you better of me by trying far harder,” Choi said of the final outcome, which was determined by public vote through mobile telephone messaging systems.

Choi suddenly became an international singing sensation after performing “Nella Fantasia” (“In My Fantasy”), an Italian classical crossover song composed by the world-famous Ennio Morricone, which was reprised for the final.

His inspirational life story has also impressed many.

Choi has confessed that he was left in an orphanage at age of three, but he ran away two years later after he was abused by people there.

He then lived on the streets in a provincial city, selling gum and energy drinks to survive, before a woman from a snack bar at the city helped him enter an evening-course school at 14 and teachers discovered his talent for singing.

To earn money to continue singing, he had a job as a part-time construction worker.

During the finals performance, Choi looked polished, dressed up in a full tuxedo instead of the blue jeans and checkered shirt that he wore for the first audition round in May.

In a country that has spawned countless K-pop boy and girl bands that have churned out hit after hit across Asia, and even some parts of Europe, after careful grooming and rigorous training, Choi’s rise to fame is even more phenomenal than his choice of song.

‘코갓텔’ 신데렐라 주민정 “난 지독한 몸치였다”

또 한 명의 신데렐라가 탄생했다. 20일 밤 11시 경희대 평화의 전당에서 열린 tvN ‘코리아 갓 탤런트 ’ 현장. 금빛 의상을 입고 검은 선글라스를 낀 댄서가 무대 중앙에서 튀어나왔다. 관절을 꺾는 듯한 퍼포먼스와 화려한 발놀림, 기계가 움직이는 것 같은 강렬함에 관객들은 눈을 떼지 못했다. 팝핀댄서 주민정(17·광주여고2)양이다.

　주양은 우승후보 1순위로 꼽히던 ‘한국의 폴포츠’ 최성봉(22)을 제치고 최종 승자가 됐다. 상금 3억원을 탔다. 생방송 직후 가진 인터뷰에서 만난 그는 순한 눈매에 수줍음을 많이 타는 여고생이었다.

20일 ‘코리아 갓 탤런트’ 결승 무대에서 파워풀한 팝핀댄스를 추고 있는 주민정양. 심사위원 박칼린은 “세계에서도 통하는 최고의 안무가가 될 것”이라고 칭찬했다.

　-춤을 추게 된 계기는.

　“초등학교 6학년 때 TV에서 동방신기 유노윤호가 팝핀을 추는 걸 보고 멋있어서 시작하게 됐다. 처음에는 성격도 소심한데다 지독한 몸치였다. 박자도 잘 못 맞추고 음악 분석도 못했다. 너무 좋아서 혹독하게 훈련했다. 매일 팔굽혀 펴기를 하고 스피커 옆에 앉아 음악을 들으며 분석했다.”

　-팝핀은 여자가 추기 힘들다던데.

　“부모님이 처음엔 그냥 밸리나 재즈댄스처럼 예쁜 춤을 추면 안 되겠느냐고 말리셨다. 근육을 사용해서 추는 파워풀한 팝핀이 정말 멋있어서 포기하기 싫었다. 여자이기 때문에 못하겠다는 생각을 해본 적은 없다. 남자보다 잘 하려면 두 배로 노력해야 했다. 지금은 부모님도 응원해주신다.”

　-우승 소감은.

　“성봉 오빠가 우승할 것이라고 생각했기 때문에 깜짝 놀랐다. 아직도 믿겨지지 않는다. 앞으로도 기억에 남는 무대를 계속 만들어 나가고 싶다.”

　-상금 은 어떻게 쓰고 싶나.

　“우승을 기대하지 않았기 때문에 구체적인 계획은 없다. 내 재능을 계속 발전시키는 데 쓰고 싶다. 지금 당장은 잠을 자고 싶고, 광주의 집에 가고 싶다.”

　-의상·선글라스가 깊은 인상을 남겼다.

　“시장에서 직접 천을 골라, 광주에서 옷을 제일 잘 만든다는 곳에 맡겼다. 금빛 의상을 선택한 것은 파워풀한 안무에 잘 맞을 거라고 생각했기 때문이다. 선글라스는 주변의 권유로 끼게 됐다. 내 눈빛이 너무 순해 보여서 강렬한 춤에 집중이 안 된다고 하더라. (웃음) 카리스마를 발산하기 위해 썼는데 반응이 좋았다.”

　-연예인 제의를 받는다면.

　“ 연예인이 되겠다는 생각은 아직 없지만, 좋은 기회가 온다면 잡을 수도 있지 않을까. (웃음) 먼 훗날에는 댄스학교를 세우고 싶다. 꿈을 이룰 수 있는 다른 길이 있다면 꼭 대학에 가지 않아도 된다고 생각한다.”

　힘겨웠던 개인사와 빼어난 노래실력으로 외신도 주목했던 최성봉씨는 2위에 머물렀다. 최씨는 “고맙고 고맙고 또 고맙다”며 “앞으로도 더 좋은 모습을 보여드리겠다”고 밝혔다. 서바이벌 오디션프로 ‘코리아 갓 탤런트’는 폴 포츠를 배출한 영국의 ‘브리튼즈 갓 탤런트’의 한국 버전이다. 결승 무대 승자는 100% 시청자 문자투표로 결정됐다.

◆팝핀(Poppin)댄스=힙합·브레이크댄스 같은 스트리트 댄스(street dance)의 하나. 즉흥적인 안무가 특징이다. 마치 근육을 튕기는 듯한 모습에서 ‘터지다’ ‘튀다’라는 뜻의 팝(pop)이 춤 이름이 됐다.
