GM, LG team up for a cleaner, cheaper drive

LG Group and U.S. automaker General Motors have signed a deal to collaborate on electric vehicle development. The deal could give a boost to the still-nascent EV market and revitalize the embattled LG Group.

LG and GM are no strangers to collaboration. LG Chem, the chemical unit of LG Group, supplies lithium-ion batteries for the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera. But the deal struck yesterday at GM’s headquarters in Detroit, Michigan is much broader and more long-term, as LG and GM will jointly design a range of electric vehicles from the bottom up. It is also a first-of-its-kind alliance between a U.S. auto giant and a Korean electronics firm.

Under the deal, several LG affiliates and GM will collaborate to make key parts and solutions for GM electric vehicles sold around the world.

Dozens of LG and GM engineers have begun working together at GM facilities in the U.S., GM spokesman Kevin Kelly told journalists. Later on, GM engineers will also be dispatched to work at LG offices in Korea.

The arrangement will help LG diversify its portfolio by entering the automotive solution business, while GM will be able to offer a wider selection of electric vehicles using LG’s expertise in batteries and electronics.

“This partnership is strategically important for LG’s future,” LG President Cho Juno said. “We fully support GM’s goal to lead the industry in the electrification of the automobile.”

Steve Girsky, GM vice chairman, added: “Consumers benefit by getting the latest fuel-saving technology faster if we work with the best suppliers.”

GM officials say the deal would allow the company to fast-track the development of more electric vehicles than it would have on its own.

GM has been pushing to expand its lineup of electric cars to get an early lead in this key technology.

Media reports earlier this month said GM was developing a plug-in hybrid for its Cadillac brand, in addition to an all-electric small car that would be sold globally.

The announcement of the LG-GM tie-up comes just three days after Ford Motor and Toyota Motor said they would collaborate to develop hybrid trucks and SUVs.

“We’re going to see relationships like this develop. The auto industry is changing and the manufacturers need to change with the changing technology,” Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, Michigan told Reuters.

It has only been since 2009 that automakers have released mass produced EVs. Growth has been sluggish. Two hurdles are lack of power and slow charging rates.

The LG-GM arrangement is a breath of fresh air for LG.

Two of LG’s pillars - LG Electronics and LG Display - are floundering. LG missed the boat on smartphones and persistently-low prices of display panels have plagued LG Display.

LG officials are hoping the EV project will give it momentum.

A total of four LG subsidiaries will take part in the project. They include LG Electronics, LG Chem and LG Innotek, which makes LED (light-emitting diode) modules, among other things. Although it is expected to be fine-tuned later, the exact extent of LG’s role will likely be in the battery system as well as the main power motor, power conversion module and climate control system.

Should the deal be as successful as hoped, LG will emerge as a major player in the global electric market as an entity that oversees the key parts and solutions, rather than just the assistant or supplier.
