Last memorial for Choi in Yangpyeong

The third memorial service for the late actress Choi Jin-sil was held at Kapsan Park Cemetery in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, yesterday, with some 30 of her relatives and friends in attendance.

Choi, a top actress for nearly 20 years, hanged herself at her home in Seoul on Oct. 2, 2008. She was 39.

Her mother Jung Ok-sook attended the memorial with Choi’s two children, whose father is former baseball player Cho Sung-min. The entertainers in attendance included comedian Lee Young-ja, model and radio DJ Hong Jin-kyung and actor Cho Yeon-woo.

Afterward, mourners visited the grave of Choi’s younger brother Choi Jin-young, who killed himself in March 2010. The singer-actor was also 39 when he died.

This year’s memorial will be the last one before Choi’s grave is moved to another place.

In March, Yangpyeong County officials discovered that a 7,550-square-meter (2-acre) area of a forest near the cemetery had been illegally destroyed to create space for more graves. Unfortunately, both Chois are buried on the site and according to the law their graves must be moved.

The families have not yet decided where to rebury the ashes, but sources say that the process should be completed by early next year.

故최진실母 "이장 문제, 시간두고 천천히 결정"

지난 2008년 숨진 故최진실의 3주기 추모식이 엄수된 가운데 유가족이 이장 문제에 대해 입을 열었다.

이날 오전 10시50분께부터 경기도 양평군 갑산공원묘원 고인의 묘역에서 진행된 고인의 추모식에는 어머니 정옥숙씨를 비롯한 자녀 환희와 준희 등 유가족, 이영자 홍진경 등 생전 절친했던 지인들을 포함, 20여 명이 참석했다.

이는 불법 조성된 묘역에 위치한 것으로 드러나 이장을 앞두고 있는 고 최진실의 묘역에서 가족과 친지들이 모인 가운데 마지막으로 열리는 추모식이다.

추모식에 참석한 고인의 어머니 정 씨는 이장문제에 대해 "다들(묘원 관계자들) 조사를 받으러 가셔서 안 계시더라"라며 "조금 기다리고 있는 중이다"라고 조심스럽게 말했다.

측근 역시 "아직은 기간이 조금 남아 있어서 이장 문제를 시간을 두고 생각해 보자고 하신다"라며 "행정적으로 이장이 불가피한 만큼 구체적인 시기가 잡히지는 않았지만 내년 초까지는 이장이 될 야 할 것 같다"라고 전했다.

앞서 양평군은 갑산공원묘원에 대해 허가 받은 범위를 넘어 묘역을 조성한 혐의로 양평 경찰서에 고발했고, 고인들의 묘를 포함한 수백 기의 묘들이 이장 위기에 몰렸다.

군 관계자에 따르면 갑산공원묘원은 양평군 양서면 양수리 산 10-2 일대에 묘역 조성 허가를 받았지만, 분묘 93기와 봉안시설 95기 등 총 188기가 허가 범위 외 사유지를 침범, 설치됐다.

이에 따라 내년 3월 30일까지 1년 내에 이장이 이뤄져야 하며, 처분에 불응 시 갑산공원은 이행강제금을 내야한다.
