Crayon Pop’s mysterious rise

Usually in K-pop, when a new song is introduced, the group’s fans swarm in a listening and buying frenzy, quickly pushing that song up as high as it will go; then, as interest dies down, the song slides down the charts.

Not so, however, for girl group Crayon Pop?. Their song “Bar Bar Bar” was released in June?, but since then it has steadily risen, and on Monday it reached 12th on the Melon music? chart.

“Many industry officials have said that it is very rare to see a song climbing like that because normally a song is pushed out of the rankings as time passes,” said the group’s agency.

“Considering that the group is a newcomer in the entertainment scene, such a performance is quite remarkable.”

The group’s music video choreography, which is very easy to follow and remember, is considered a major factor behind the song’s rising popularity, at least according to the agency.

Netizens, on the other hand, tend to credit the group’s sheer weirdness, with a low-budget music video that features the five-member group in silly helmets and bright clothes, bouncing around and acting somewhere between cute and ridiculous.
