Blue Dragon winner shocks

The big winner at the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards, one of the major movie events in Korea, was a big surprise. In a year marked by several huge and critically acclaimed hits, the best film award went to Lee Joon-ik’s “Wish.”

Based on a true story of an 8-year-old girl who was raped by a drunk older man, “Wish” did moderately well at the box office, with 2.7 million admissions, but was far behind films like “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” which had 12.8 million admissions, “Snowpiercer,” with 9.3 million or “Face Reader,” with 9.1 million.

“Wish,” which was criticized by many for trying to turn one of the most infamous news stories in recent years into a maudlin piece of mass entertainment, also took the best supporting actress award for Ra Mi-ran, who played the mother of the young girl at the center of the story.

“I want to say this to the many girls out there who are in suffering like So-won [the name of the girl in ‘Wish’] - it’s not your fault. It’s OK. Please cheer up,” said Ra in tears as she gave her acceptance speech.

Despite losing the best picture award, director Bong Joon-ho received the best director prize for “Snowpiercer.”

Actor Hwang Jung-min received the best actor award for his role in “New World,” while actress Han Hyo-joo won the best actress award for “Cold Eyes.”
