Gyeongju sets scene for Zhang movie

The new film “Gyeongju” from third-generation Korean-Chinese filmmaker Zhang Lu features accomplished actor Park Hae-il of “Eungyo” (2012) and actress Shin Min-a.

As its title suggests, the story is set in the ancient city of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang - the capital of the Silla Kingdom (668-935 A.D.).

Zhang depicts the bizarre love story of Choi Hyun (Park) and Gong Yun-hee (Shin), in a 24-hour experience that changes their entire lives.

“Min-a has grown up from our first film ‘A Million’ [2009],” said Park at a press conference held in Gwangjin District last week. “In ‘Gyeongju,’ she put some mature color into her acting, and the change in her character was a good match to the film’s plot.”

Though Zhang may sound foreign to Korean filmgoers, the 52-year-old has gained recognition in the international film scene over the years, including in Venice, Berlin and Busan.

“Gyeongju” will hit local cinemas on June 12.
