Eagles release pitcher after poor performance

The Hanhwa Eagles said yesterday they have designated right-handed starter Caleb Clay for assignment after he earned a record of 3-4 with a 8.34 ERA in his 10 Korea Baseball Organization appearances. The 25-year-old Clay became the second foreign player to be released this season after he failed to impress the Eagles coaching staff.

Clay started the season off right, winning the March 30 season opener by allowing two runs in five and two-third innings, but he failed to pitch more than four innings in five of his 10 appearances.

The average ERA in his last two starts was 31.90 (13 runs allowed in three and two-third innings while giving up 15 hits).

Clay was introduced as a control pitcher, but he failed to prove his worth in tricky situations, allowing 25 walks while only striking out 20.

His opponent batting average was .367 (.395 against lefties/.341 against righties) and his WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) was 2.17.

The Eagles said they will scout out a new foreign starter to fill Clay’s spot.
