Hyundai Heavy Industries, the nation’s largest shipbuilder, said it has developed a new welding method using robots to build offshore facilities.

The company said that it is the first company to remotely conduct tungsten inert gas (Tig) welding on special pipes. The pipes used for offshore facilities are usually duplex stainless steel and are resistant to erosion.

HHI said that its previous Tig welding process required welding wires to be supplied manually and took a long time. But the new method can continuously supply the welding wires with heat, which enables the robot to conduct the welding job six times faster.
