‘Pirates’ swashbuckles its way to box-office No. 1

Record-breaking film “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” has lost its No. 1 place in the local box office, with “The Pirates” coming in at first place, according to the Korean Film Council.

The movie has garnered more than 16 million views. It topped a record in Korea for the most ticket sales, previously set by Hollywood blockbuster “Avatar” at 13 million.

However, it still managed to achieve almost 30 percent of ticket sales over the weekend, reaching cumulative sales of 125 billion won ($122.5 million).

“The Pirates” took more than 35 percent of ticket sales from Friday to Sunday with almost six million admissions.

U.S. romance “The Fault in Our Stars” came in third, with more than 166,000 people at local theaters, while another Korean film, “Haemoo,” starring idol star Park Yoo-chun of boy group JYJ, came fourth.

“Begin Again” with actress Keira Knightley, which opened here on Aug. 13, came in fifth place. It has so far made 2 billion won through ticket sales.

Meanwhile, new action movies entered the chart over the weekend. “The Expendables 3,” with many big-name action stars including Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Harrison Ford, sold 77,645 tickets.
