DMZ movie fest launches its 6th event

Under the theme “peace, life and communication,” the sixth DMZ International Documentary Film Festival began on Wednesday.

As suggested by the title, the eight-day event aims to promote reconciliation of the Korean Peninsula and bring global issues to the forefront by introducing documentaries that focus on diverse problems.

Film director Kim Ki-duk, festival director and actor Cho Jae-hyun, Gyeonggi Governor Nam Kyung-pil and some 600 other guests were at the opening ceremony in Goyang Arum Nuri, Ilsan, Gyeonggi to show their support.

“A lot of people think that documentaries are hard to understand. We tried to formulate the event so that the audience can easily approach the films as much as possible,” said Cho.

This year, the DMZ documentary festival will introduce 111 documentaries from 30 nations, nine of which received funding from the festival.

One of these was the opener, “Crying Boxers,” which was directed by E Il-ha.

“I tried to make the least boring film possible,” E joked at the opening event.

The 90-minute feature hones in on the daily lives of Korean students living in Japan who strive to achieve their dreams despite the ideological and political instability they experience there.

“Documentaries give you the overwhelming feeling that is somewhat different from what you can get from staged films,” said actor Cho.

“I hope people will feel that kind of impression from the documentaries shown during the festival.”

Selected films will be screened at Megabox Kintex in Ilsan until Wednesday. For more information, visit dmzdocs.com.
