3 six-party envoys to gather in Seoul

Representatives from South Korea, the United States and Japan for the six-party talks will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday in Seoul for the first time since January, when they gathered in Tokyo.

The talks were originally formed with the two Koreas, Japan, Russia, China and the United States, with the aim of convincing Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions and to resolve security concerns on the peninsula. North Korea pulled out of the association in late 2008, however.

“Hwang Joon-kook, the special representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, is meeting with U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Sung Kim and Junichi Ihara, the director-general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau,” an official from Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

“[The representatives] will assess recent threats from North Korea and discuss measures for progress .?.?. including deterrence, pressure and dialogue,” he added.

The meeting next week is expected to focus on strengthening efforts among the three nations to deter the North Korean threat following its recent test-firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
