An intelligent mirror that can analyze skin conditions and offer beauty tips has long been considered a futuristic device.

But telecom company LG U+ and furniture maker Hanssem said on Wednesday that they have come up with the “Holy Grail” of the industry by combining their expertise in technology and furniture design.

The mirror, dubbed LTE Magic Mirror, can analyze a user’s skin conditions, including pores, humidity level and wrinkles, using built-in high-definition cameras.

It also offers scientifically-backed beauty tips and can advise a user on which products can fix particular skin problems.

“The mirror is an industry-first smart mirror available for consumers, combining furniture with the concept of Internet of Things [IoT],” said Hwang Chi-ok, director at Hanssem.

Tech giants such as Panasonic have featured a similar type of mirror, but the product has yet to be made available for sale.

The LTE Magic Mirror is available for sale at Hanssem stores, the country’s top furniture company, and consumers can try it out at one of the company’s six flagship stores.

The carrier and furniture manufacturer began developing the mirror after they signed an agreement last May.

The two companies invited dermatologists at the early stage of development and conducted clinical tests with 200 people.

To use the mirror, a user should subscribe to LG U+’s Home IoT service that will offer a free two-year contract.

Despite the features, the high prices will likely be a negative factor. The mirror alone is priced at 999,000 won ($815) while a dressing table fitted with the mirror will cost 1.3 million won.

The price is high given that Hanssem’s other mirror-attached tables start from 100,000 won.

Manufacturers believe that the connected product will be appealing to beauty-conscious Koreans and even seen as affordable considering money otherwise spent on dermatology and skin care clinics.

“Consumers can use skin condition diagnosis that was only available at skin care clinics at their home,” said Kim Young-man at LG U+’s Home IoT division.

The release of the LTE Magic Mirror will add to the wide range of smart home devices offered by LG U+.

The telecom provider said that the smart home service is an important pillar of their business, since the sector has promising prospects for the future.
