Online addiction caused by stress

Middle and high school students with higher levels of stress are more likely to become addicted to computer games, according to a study conducted by a research team at Gangneung-Wonju National University’s department of welfare.

Prof. Park Byeong-seon and Prof. Park Soo-ji conducted a survey of 6,322 middle and high school students to analyze the correlation among their stress levels, addiction to online games and relations with friends, family and teachers. Their study found a 0.2 correlation between stress and online addiction (a number approaching one means a strong correlation).

“The 0.2 correlation figure means stress is a major reason behind gaming addiction,” one of the researchers said.

“The major cause behind stress is academic pressure. We have to change the educational process so that students can have fun while learning,” the research team also suggested.
