Art group offers classes for children
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will offer after-school classes for aspiring musical actors, directors and producers starting April 23.Run by the nonprofit art group K-One Arts Company, the classes will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m on Saturdays, the office announced Tuesday. Classes will be held in the former northern regional office of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.
Students will get professional training in acting, singing and arts management, including musical production. Enrollment is limited to 50 students, and the course is one year long.
The teachers are professionals in various entertainment fields, including actor Choi Min-hyeok, jazz pianist Ryu Seung-hi and opera singer and vocal trainer Kim Hyoun-jung.
Students will learn how to plan, produce and perform a musical piece based on a moment in history when Emperor Gwangmu of the Joseon Dynasty, commonly known as Gojong, sent three envoys to the Hague Convention in 1907 to combat Japan’s colonization of Korea.
The students will do street performances of the piece at Gwanghwamun Plaza, in front of Seoul City Hall and the Gyeonggi Provincial Building, as well as at the Multicultural Family Support Center and on Haengbok Street, both in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. The piece will also be performed in large concert halls, including the Seoul Arts Center.
Students will be selected through auditions held on April 16 at 11 a.m. Tuition is free, and every middle and high school student living in Gyeonggi is eligible to apply. For the audition, students can sing a song of their choosing.
“Students who have dreams related to musicals can take part in the audition,” said Kwon Soon-tae, director of the after-school class. “I hope students can fulfill their dreams and passions through the musical school.”
