English contest taps winners
Six teams, each consisting of one American high school student and one Korean, competed in the finals.
The subject for the final round was how the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system on Korean soil would improve international security. The prize money for first, second and third places were $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000.
Steven Lee, president of George Mason University Korea, highlighted that the competition stood out from other speech contests in that it invited students from both Korea and the United States to form teams and think beyond sociocultural differences.
The speech competition was held from Aug. 1 to 5 under the goal “to prepare the next generation of young global leaders to communicate effectively with people of different cultures and backgrounds and cultivate leadership capability,” the school said in its press release.
