Yoona takes on dark role in ‘The K2’

Yoona of K-pop group Girls’ Generation returns to the small screen with tvN’s upcoming “bodyguard action” thriller “The K2.”

In the drama, the singer-actress plays an orphan, a much darker role that is a departure from her usually bright and positive image.

“I fell in love with this grittier character because I’ve always taken roles that are usually the opposite,” Yoona said during a press conference in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, on Tuesday, accompanied by actors Ji Chang-wook, Song Yun-ah, Jo Sung-ha and director Kwak Jung-hwan.

“It’s more than what the general perception about me will be,” she continued. “It’s about what I can prove to myself and hoping that viewers can learn to accept me for what I can provide.”

The girl group member wasn’t the only one who strayed from her usual image for this new drama. Fellow actress Song took on the role of the female antagonist, her first in 18 years.

When asked about these unusual casting choices, director Kwak said, “Just like the actors that took these challenging roles, I wanted to challenge myself as well. Even I doubted whether Song could bring out the dark charisma necessary for the role. But her acting drew me in like no one else before her.”

“The K2” will air its first episode on tvN on Friday.
