Lee Yeon-hee went to Paris for the perfect role : Recently-wrapped drama ‘The Package’ offered the actor a chance to grow

Q. How do you feel after wrapping up the show?
A. Personally, I was able to sympathize with the character, So-so. The very last sentence, “I can live to the fullest on my own without depending too much on others if only I love myself more,” especially touched my heart. It is also because So-so was emotionally hurt in a relatively young age, in her early 20s, so while playing her, I always thought, “I am that So-so.” Many people around me said that I met the perfect character through this show. They said that So-so and I have some things in common, which is why I think I was able to play her so naturally.
What made you eager to be in this drama?
It seemed like the role was my destiny. I was especially attracted to this drama because at that time [I was cast], I had thought that being a tour guide is quite charming and I wanted to play this kind of character in this kind of drama.
Many people said that your acting has improved a lot. What do you think?
I became an actor because I like the job. But merely knowing that I should be good at it doesn’t actually make me a good actor. So, I questioned whether I was a talented actor at all. After I finished shooting the MBC period drama “Hwajeong” [which wrapped up in September 2015] I thought again and again about whether I should continue acting. I felt very thankful of those who called me. After going through that period, I started thinking more about the overall drama instead of only my acting. And while shooting this drama, I wanted my role to harmonize well with the other actors. This drama really has changed my philosophy of acting.

When I was younger, I was quite shy, so I always tried not to cause any disruption to others. I didn’t discuss work-related issues with others before. But now, since I had spent more time with the crew and other actors, I changed my ways and have started to interact more with them. Since I was one of the older actors on set, it allowed me to care for the younger actors as well, not just myself.
How was it to work with Jung Yong-hwa?
Filming was really fun, but it was a bit busy. There was not enough time to take a look at what we shot because we were in a rush. I was anxious inside, but I had to focus on acting. I think we just believed in each other. Jung is very talented in many aspects, especially as a musician. I saw him writing music whenever he felt inspired, even while we were filming. He was a very confident actor as well. I think he played Ma-ru perfectly - the character is very tender and caring, yet manly in his love-life.
The kiss scene drew a lot of attention. How was it?
I was freezing when we were filming that scene. (laughter) It was shot at night in Korea last December, so it was really cold. I did it with a mindset to give it a go in just one attempt.
Who do you want to try working with in the future?
I want to work with Cho Jung-seok and Byun Yo-han. I saw Byun once in an event, and I think he is very attractive. Their movies were impressive as well.
Since your debut in 2001, I don’t think you have ever dated anyone publicly.
It is not that I haven’t dated anyone but it has just happened to be not publicized. I get inspiration for romantic scenes through my own relationships or through romance drama, movies and books.
What are your future plans?
I want to be closer to the audience. If there is an opportunity to be on TV entertainment shows, I am willing to join. I want to be like a neighbor. I especially like cooking programs.

연기력 논란 꼬리표 뗀 이연희 ”'더패키지'=운명작”
배우 이연희가 '더 패키지'를 통해 연기력 논란의 꼬리표를 뗀 소감을 전했다.
20일 오전 서울 종로구 팔판동에 위치한 한 카페에서 이연희의 JTBC 금토극 '더 패키지' 종영 인터뷰가 진행됐다.
이연희는 '더 패키지'에서 가이드 윤소소로 분했다. 정용화와 각각 가이드와 손님으로 호흡을 맞췄다. 여행지에서 처음 만나 운명적인 사랑에 빠졌다. 낯선 여행지에서 꿈꾸는 로망을 아름답게 풀어내 호평받았다.
종영소감?
이날 이연희는 "소소라는 역할이 공감대가 많이 됐다. 마지막 대사였던 '내 자신을 더 사랑해야지 다른 사람에게 기대지 않고 온전히 살아갈 수가 있다'는 대사가 그 당시 마음에 정말 많이 와 닿았던 대사였다. 아직 완전체가 아닌 20대에 큰 상처를 얻었던 소소였기 때문에 마음에 와 닿았다. 그래서 너무 좋았고 소소를 연기하면서도 계속 '내가 소소지!'란 생각으로 연기했던 것 같다"고 회상했다.
인생캐릭터 경신이란 호평에 대해 "닮은 점도 많고 자연스러운 모습이 많아서 좋았다고 해주셔서 좋았다. 욕심을 냈던 드라마였다. 노력한 만큼, 준비한 만큼 표현이 잘 되어서 다행이다 싶다"고 미소를 지었다.
왜욕심을 냈었나?
욕심을 냈던 이유와 관련, "운명적으로 다가왔다. 제작발표회에서 운명적인 작품이라고 말했던 게 첫 여행이 패키지 여행이었고 그 당시 가이드란 직업에 대해 매력을 느꼈다. 이런 드라마를, 이런 역할을 해보고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 그런 드라마가 딱 들어와서 정말 하고 싶다는 생각이 많았다"면서 연기력 논란을 이겨냈다는 평에 대해 "나의 연기에 대한 것들보다는 전체적인 드라마를 많이 생각했다. 잘 어우러져서 온전한 드라마로 봐줬으면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다. 연기를 하면서 사람들과 잘 어우러지고 그런 연기를 하고 싶다는 생각이 많아졌다"고 한층 성숙해진 연기관을 전했다.
달라진 연기관?
'더 패키지'를 만난 후부터 확 달라지게 됐다고 고백했다. "어렸을 때부터 일해서 낯을 많이 가렸다. 누를 끼치지 않으려는 생각이 강했다. 그러다 보니 혼자 준비하고 있는 시간이 많았다. 얘기할 시간이 별로 없었다. 그런데 2년 전부터 달라졌다. 스태프들과 배우들을 챙기게 되더라. '화정' 찍은 이후에 이 일을 계속 해야 하나 고민이 많았는데 '더 패키지' 이후 연기관이 달라졌다. 감사함이 커졌다"고 밝혔다.
정용화와 호흡?
파트너 정용화와의 호흡에 대해 "현장이 너무 재밌으면서도 정신이 없었다. 촬영 스케줄에 쫓기다 보니 모니터할 시간도 없었다. 내적으로는 불안했지만, 연기적인 부분에 집중해야 했다. 그래서 서로를 믿고 연기했던 것 같다"고 운을 떼면서 "(정)용화는 많은 끼를 가진 친구다. 뮤지션으로서 천재적인 감각을 가졌다고 생각한다. 촬영 중간에 휴대전화로 영감을 얻고 음악을 만들더라. 연기할 때도 거침이 없었다. 정말 마루 그 자체로 순수하면서도 사랑에 있어 돌진하는 그런 연기를 정말 잘 소화한 것 같다는 생각이 들더라"고 말했다.
키스신 화제
키스신이 화제였다. 두 사람이 섬에 낙오된 상황. 서로의 마음을 확인하는 첫 순간이었다. 하지만 수위가 생각보다 진해 많은 관심을 불러모았다.
이연희는 "촬영할 때 너무 추웠다. 그 신은 한국에서 12월께 촬영했다. 밤이기도 했고 너무 추워서 한번에 가자는 심정으로 찍었다. 외딴 섬에 떨어져서 낯선 남녀가 불붙은 사랑일 수도 있다는 생각이 들어 애정에 있어 거침이 없을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 그런데 어떻게 표현해야 하나 어려웠다. 다행히도 용화가 잘 해줘서 좋은 장면이 나왔던 것 같다"면서 "집에서 보면서 저 정도였나란 생각이 들더라. 깜짝 놀랐다"고 털어놓으며 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
새로 해보고 싶은분?
앞으로 호흡을 맞춰보고 싶은 배우에 대해 묻자 이연희는 "조정석 선배님과 호흡을 맞추고 싶다. 변요한 씨와는 장애인 홍보대사로 임명되는 행사 때 뵈었는데 굉장히 매력 있더라. 영화도 인상 깊게 봤다. 그런 분과도 연기를 해보고 싶다"고 밝혔다.
열애설?
데뷔 16년 차 이연희는 크고 작은 열애설에 거의 휩싸인 바 없다. 열애설 없는 노하우와 관련, "연애를 안 한 건 아니다. 어떻게 하다 보니 그렇게 됐다"고 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 이어 "연애를 통해 로맨스에 대한 영감을 얻기도 하고, 로맨스 영화를 좋아해서 영화나 책을 통해서 영감을 느낀다"고 설명했다.
하고싶은것?
앞으론 대중에게 좀 더 친근하게 다가가고 싶다는 이연희는 "예능 출연도 기회가 생긴다면 하고 싶다. 노력하고 있다. 옆집 언니 같은 느낌으로 다가가고 싶다. 요리 프로그램을 좋아한다"고 강조하기도 했다.
