Lotte enlists AI to help it find new employees

Lotte Group will implement artificial intelligence (AI) in its recruitment process this year as part of its efforts to become increasingly digital, as pledged by Chairman Shin Dong-bin last year.

The nation’s fifth largest conglomerate announced Monday it will use AI to evaluate applicants’ resumes and cover letters to more precisely find suitable candidates and save time. One way the system will do the sorting will be by removing cover letters suspected of plagiarism.

“It is our first time using artificial intelligence in the recruitment process, and we hope it will enable us to do more precise evaluations and give opportunities to those who deserve it,” said a Lotte official. “Youth unemployment is a big social problem and the new system will contribute to solving that issue.”

Lotte’s data-analyzing affiliate, Lotte Data Communication, and domestic language-processing firm have joined forces to create the resume-sorting AI. To determine whether an applicant is suitable, the system will compare applicants to well-performing employees to see how many factors correspond.

After this, the system will determine whether applicants are suitable for the department to which they have applied by looking at their experience and background.
