Shin So-yul is more than just a friend : The actor, who often plays supporting roles, is waiting for the right opportunity to come her way
Of course, constantly playing supporting roles wasn’t what she had longed for when she started acting while she was in college. For a long time, she was stressed about being known as a supporting actor, but now, she has started to accept that her acting style is best suited for secondary roles and says she will remain patient until she sees her chance to take the spotlight.
Without taking a break, Shin has joined the ongoing SBS drama “Shall We Kiss First,” taking on another supporting role.
“Things seem to have changed because even just a year or two ago, I was thinking about how much airtime I get,” said Shin, in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
“Even when I get a big role, it isn’t so fulfilling if the work itself isn’t [high] quality,” she said. “On the other hand, I feel accomplished when I’m part of a quality work even if my part isn’t so big.”
The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. It looks like you play the friend of a lead character quite often. Did you intend to do so?
A. When I was interviewed two to three years ago, I talked about how I wanted to find a role that was not the friend of a lead character. Now, I think about good work instead of my character. It is thought in Korea that a friend of the main character is a small role as the story runs around the leads. I think that’s what stressed me out in the past. In “Black Knight,” I was playing Yeong-mi, a friend of actor Shin Se-kyung, but Yeong-mi had her own character. I don’t need to worry too much about how others see things, I just need to do well to show my character.
Why do you think you usually play the friend?
Each has their trait. I think [the industry] sees me that way. The tone of my voice, and my facial expressions that encourage the other characters to calm down when they are emotional seem to get me chosen for such roles. I felt disappointed at first, but now I think that’s my skill and I need to do better at it. I don’t want to lose myself just because I want to be the lead.
Besides doing TV dramas and movies, what do you think about doing a play?
I always wanted to do a play. My friend from school suggested that I do a play. I was a bit worried since acting [in front of the camera] is different from acting on stage, but it was so much fun [when I did it.] Meeting the audience in person was really fun. I want to do another, but I have not been getting any offers. I’m waiting. I also want to do musicals, so I’m trying to learn how to sing.
Do you have passion for doing something different?
I don’t want to be greedy. When I am greedy, it shows. When I get greedy, I don’t look relaxed and comfortable. I will take a challenge in doing new characters and being in new industries, but I won’t try to make something that cannot be done work. I will do my best to show a better side of me for those who cheer for me, and I try to go with the flow. When there’s a good chance, I’ll make a move.
Are you a positive person?
I try to be. Even when there is something I want to say, I just don’t. In fact, I do have passion for my work, and that makes me cautious. These days, I think if I behave right, maybe I don’t need to be as cautious.
It’s been over 10 years since you debuted. How have you changed?
I debuted when I was 20. Back then, I wasn’t [actor] Shin So-yul. I was just a student studying acting [in college]. I didn’t have an agency. I started playing assistant roles and then came here. There are times I thought I was experiencing a slump, but when I take a look back, I begin to wonder what was so difficult. I try to think positively. After each project, I don’t know immediately after, but I [find things I regret] after a year. When I look at the acting I did before, I feel a bit like I have grown. Instead of greedily thinking about what to do to make myself better, just living my life and applying what I [learn from] my own life experiences seems to be a good thing. If [the public] sees me only as a kid who’s just cheerful and immature, I wish they would at least once think that I have gotten older and my acting has matured.

신소율 ”분량 적어도 작품 좋으면 보람차요”
'여주인공의 친구'의 이미지가 강해진 신소율은 이미지 변신도 꾀했다. 그러나 시간이 지나니 이게 자신의 매력이라는걸 깨달았고, 분량이 아닌 작품이 우선이라는 것을 깨우쳤다. 그렇게 신소율은 성숙을 거듭했다.
그리고 KBS 2TV '흑기사'에서 또 '여주인공(신세경)의 친구' 김영미 역을 맡았다. 그러나 이번엔 달랐다. 늘 밝고 활발한 캐릭터가 아닌 사연이 있는 복합적인 캐릭터였다. 신세경의 아버지의 죽음을 목격한 이였다. 어떻게 연기해야할 지 난감했지만, 그동안 견디고 버텨온 연기 경력으로 김영미를 소화했다. 자신이 할 수 있는 영역에서 최선을 다했고, 할 수 있는 능력치를 최대로 올렸다.
"원래 나를 좋아해줬던 분들에게 더 좋은 모습 보여드리고 흘러가는 대로 있다가 좋은 기회가 있을 때 변신을 하려고 해요."
- 주인공 친구는 섭렵한 것 같다. 친구계의 달인이다.
"2~3년 전만 해도 인터뷰 때 주인공 친구가 아닌 제 배역을 찾고싶다고 얘기했다. 지금은 내 캐릭터보다 작품이 좋으면 된다. 우리나라는 주인공 위주로 흘러가서 주인공 친구라고 하면 작은 역할이라고 생각하는 편이다. 그게 내 생각을 옭아맨 잣대 같다. '흑기사'에서 신세경 친구 영미 역이었지만, 영미 만의 캐릭터가 있다. 남들 시선을 중요하게 생각하지 않고 내가 맡은 캐릭터만 잘하면 된다."
- 그런데 왜 주인공 친구로 섭외가 많이 들어올까.
"자기만의 특화가 있지 않나. 냉정하게 평가했을 때 그런 식으로 찾아주시는 것 같다. 목소리 톤도 그렇고, 극 안에 있었을 때 주인공이 우울하면 활기를 복돋아 주는 톤과 표정 때문에 주변인으로 캐스팅 되는 것 같다. 처음엔 서운했는데 이젠 이런 특화된 부분을 발전시키는 게 맞다고 생각한다. 주인공을 하고 싶은 마음 때문에 자아가 흔들리고 싶지 않다."
- TV·영화에 이어 연극에도 도전했더라.
"연극은 늘 하고 싶었다. 공연을 한 적이 없어서 연락도 안 오고 하자는 사람도 없고 찾는 사람이 없었다. 그때 학교 동기 오세미가 연극을 추천했다. 매체 연기와 무대 연기가 달라서 걱정을 했는데 너무 재밌더라. 실제로 관객을 만나는게 정말 재밌었다. 또 무대에 서고 싶은데 연락이 없다. 공연 관계자들의 연락을 기다리고 있다. 뮤지컬도 하고 싶어서 노래 배우려고 한다."
- 쉬지않고 다음 작품 '키스 먼저 할까요?'에 출연한다.
"'안 쉬고 소처럼 일하자'가 목표이다. 배유미 작가님 작품을 꼭 하고 싶었고, 감우성 선배님의 컴백작이기도 했다. 드라마 덕후라 참여하고 싶은 욕망이 컸다. 1회부터 안 나오고 뒤에서 서포트 하는 감초역이다. 감독님이 '주요배역은 아니야'라며 섭외 요청을 했는데 '감우성이 나오는데 뭐가 중요해'라며 바로 한다고 했다.(웃음)"
- 분량 욕심이 적은 것 같다.
"1~2년 전 만해도 분량을 생각했는데 이젠 시대가 변한 것 같다. 큰 역할을 맡았어도 작품이 별로면 보람이 없다. 반면 분량이 적어도 좋은 작품에 참여하면 뿌듯하다."
- 색다른 캐릭터에 대한 욕심이 있나.
"악착같이 욕심 부리고 싶지 않다. 욕심 부리면 그 모습이 그대로 드러나더라. 욕심을 부리면 여유가 없다. 편해보이지 않는다. 새로운 분야나 새로운 캐릭터는 꾸준히 도전할 건데 안 되는 걸 되게 하지 않을 거다. 원래 나를 좋아해줬던 분들에게 더 좋은 모습 보여드리고 흘러가는 대로 있다가 좋은 기회가 있을 때 변신을 하려고 한다."
- 긍정적인 편이다.
"긍정적이려고 노력한다. 하고 싶은 말이 있어도 안하는 편이다. 사실은 일에 대한 열망이 있다보니 모든 걸 조심스러워 한다. 그런데 그냥 행동을 똑바로 하면 조심하지 않아도 되지 않을까라고 요즘 들어 생각하고 있다."
- 어느덧 서른을 넘겼다. 연기가 성장한 것 같나.
"작품 끝나고 당장은 모르겠지만 1년 후에 다시 보면 반성하게 된다. '어렸네. 열심히 했네'라고 자체평한 뒤에 노트북을 덮는다. '흑기사'도 1년 뒤에 보고 노트북을 안 닫으면 좋겠다."
- 연기가 변했다고 느끼나.
"나이도 있고 관리를 해야겠다는 느낌도 있다. 예전에 했던 연기를 보니 성숙한 느낌이 조금이라도 든다. '뭘 해야지 발전할까' 욕심 내는 것보다 계속 부딪히고 배우고 인생경험 쌓으면서 그것을 연기에 접목 시키는 게 좋은 것 같다."
- 데뷔한지 10년이 훌쩍 넘었다.
"데뷔는 20살 때 했다. 그땐 신소율이 아니었다. 그냥 연영과 학생이었다. 기획사도 없었다. 보조 출연부터 시작해 열심히 해서 여기까지 왔다. 슬럼프라고 생각한 시기는 있지만 조금 지나서 돌이켜 보면 '뭐가 힘들었을까' 라는 생각이 들었다. 좋게 생각하려고 한다."
- 대중들이 신소율을 어떤 배우로 봤으면 좋겠나.
"그동안 철없고 밝은 애로 봤다면 '이제 나이 좀 먹고 연기 물올랐네'라고 한 번씩만 생각해주셨으면 좋겠다."
