가상현실에도 도서관이 있는 까닭
스필버그 감독의 최신작 ‘레디 플레이어 원’을 보고 있으면 직접 게임을 하지 않고도 화려한 게임 속 세상을 누비는 기분이 든다. 영화 속 배경인 2045년의 미래에선 누구나 가상현실에 접속, 현실의 자신과 다른 아바타로 변신해 온갖 체험을 즐긴다. 멋진 자동차를 몰고 킹콩이 출몰하는 도심에서 경주를 벌이거나, 신화 속 같은 광활한 풍경에서 대규모 전투에 참여할 수도 있다. 우주 저편의 화려한 클럽을 찾아 공중부양 상태로 춤을 추는 것도, 획득한 아이템에 따라 초대형 건담 로봇으로 변신하는 것도 가능하다.
뜻밖인 건 이런 가상현실 세계에도 도서관이 있단 점. 동서고금의 고전을 비롯해 책으로 빼곡한 도서관은 아니다. 스티브 잡스 뺨치는 천재적 인물 할리데이에 관한 방대한 정보를 모은 곳이라 이름도 '할리데이 저널'이다. 이곳에선 전문 사서의 안내로 책 대신 홀로그램 영상을 통해 그의 인생 여러 장면을 눈으로 볼 수 있다. 안 그래도 오락거리가 넘치는데 누가 이런 델 찾을까 싶지만 모르시는 말씀. 할리데이가 엄청난 유산을 내걸고 제시한 수수께끼 같은 과제를 풀려면 그에 대한 별별 지식이 큰 힘이다. 알고 보면 이곳에선 영화를 보는 대신 가상현실답게 영화 속에 들어갈 수도 있다.
지식과 정보의 집대성을 상징하는 점에서 도서관은 상상력을 자극하는 공간이다. 아르헨티나 출신의 세계적 작가 호르헤 루이스 보르헤스의 단편 『바벨의 도서관』(1941)에는 육각형 공간이 무한하게 반복되는 도서관이 나온다. 무한하게 거대한 도서관, 꼭 같은 것이 하나도 없이 모든 책이 소장된 곳이다. 영화 '인터스텔라'(2014)에는 여기에서 영감을 받은 듯한 장면이 나온다. 책장이 무한대로 펼쳐지는 공간을 통해 우주와 지구, 과거와 현재를 연결한다.

지식의 이런 집대성이 가능할까. 아니 정보 홍수에 허우적대는 시대에 과연 필요할까. '레디 플레이어 원'에는 할리데이의 취향, 그를 숭배하는 주인공들 취향을 따라 80, 90년대 대중문화에 대한 언급과 묘사가 숱하게 등장한다.
이 잡다한 지식이 무슨 쓸모가 있냐고 한다면 일단 어니스트 클라인을 예로 들겠다. 10대 시절부터 각종 게임과 영화 등에 빠져든 경험을 바탕으로 2011년 펴낸 그의 장편 소설이 '레디 플레이어 원'의 원작이다. 영화화 판권은 출간 전 팔렸고, 소설은 베스트셀러가 됐으니 그야말로 성공한 덕후다.
