Kim Bum-soo reflects on 20 years

Singer Kim Bum-soo has unveiled his plan to embark on a project called “Make 20” in order to celebrate his 20 years in the industry next year. The singer, who debuted with his first album “A Promise” in April 1999, said in a press conference late last month that he plans to release 20 new songs.

“This is to prepare for music to show in the next 20 years, rather than to look back on what I have done over the past 20 years,” said Kim.

“Make 20” consists of three parts: “Re-make,” through which popular songs will be given a new sound; “New-make,” in which the singer will introduce new songs; and “We-make,” which will consist of collaborations with other singers. The singer did not set up a specific timeline for when the songs will be released.

The idea for this project came from the Monthly Project Yoon Jong Shin, a project that the singer Yoon started in 2010 to release a new song every month.

“I was so impressed by his diligence because the project has not only became a brand, but also produced the hit song ‘Like It,’” said Kim.

“I’m not so confident that I could set up such a timeline and release songs, but I will continue my work every time I get to meet a good song.”

The first song he is working on is Shin Hyo-bum’s song “I Love You,” released in 1994. The beginning part of the song has been transformed into a dance track, while the later part carries a classic gospel feel.

“My dream to become a singer began while I watched Shin singing with all his charisma,” said Kim. He also explained that the lyrics, which go beyond love between men and women, consoled him. The music video for the song was filmed at a church in Noryangjin, western Seoul, and features Nigerian-Korean model Han Hyun-min.

When asked what the most memorable moment of his 20-year career was, he chose his participation in the 2011 MBC music show “I’m a Singer.” He gained instant fame after he sung Lee So-ra’s “Please” on the survival show.

“I have always thought that I was lending my voice to music, but that was the first time for me to be the one that takes spotlight on the stage and get a round of applause,” said Kim.

He also added that he is now used to being known as a “visual singer,” a nickname he earned during the show, considering that he did his previous work in the industry with his face hidden because industry officials worried that he might not be charming enough to stand onstage.

At the 20-year mark in his career, Kim has two goals: to sing for 50 years and to go global.

An English version of his second album’s first single “Hello Goodbye Hello” made it to 51st place on Billboard’s Hot Single Sales chart in 2001, and he doesn’t want that track to be his only song to make it onto the global charts.

“This is a goal I will never give up on until the day I retire,” said Kim, repeating his intention to be recognized all around the world.

“It is not that I am separately preparing for my work in the United States, but I believe what’s Korean is what’s most international and will do my best in where I am now.”

20년차 가수 김범수 “앞으로 20년, 다시 시작”

가수 김범수(39)가 장기 음원 프로젝트 ‘메이크(MAKE) 20’으로 데뷔 20주년의 포문을 연다. 1999년 4월 1집 ‘약속(A Promise)’으로 데뷔한 20년 차 중견가수로서 20곡을 순차적으로 발표하는 대형 프로젝트를 시작한 것이다. 25일 서울 합정동에서 열린 기자간담회에서 그는 “지금까지 20년 동안 해온 것을 정리하기보다 앞으로 20년 동안 선보일 음악을 준비하는 마음으로 시작하게 됐다”고 밝혔다.

‘메이크 20’ 프로젝트는 크게 세 파트로 나뉜다. 과거 명곡을 재해석하는 리메이크(RE-MAKE), 새롭게 신곡을 선보이는 뉴메이크(NEW-MAKE), 다른 가수들과 컬래버레이션 하는 위메이크(WE-MAKE)다. 모티브가 된 것은 2010년부터 매달 신곡을 발표하는 ‘월간 윤종신’. 이를 두고 김범수는 “프로젝트가 브랜드화될 뿐만 아니라 국민 히트송 ‘좋니’가 탄생하는 걸 보면서 그 부지런함과 성실함에 감탄을 금치 못했다”며 “주기를 정해놓고 발표할 자신은 없지만 좋은 곡을 만날 때마다 꾸준히 지치지 않고 이어갈 계획”이라고 말했다.

첫 번째 곡으로 선택한 것은 1994년 신효범이 발표한 ‘난 널 사랑해’. 전반부는 트렌디한 EDM, 후반부는 클래식한 가스펠 느낌으로 재탄생했다. 김범수는 “카리스마 넘치는 모습으로 폭발적 가창력을 쏟아내는 신효범 선배를 보며 가수의 꿈을 키웠다”며 “남녀 간의 사랑에 국한되지 않은 가사에 큰 위로를 받았다”고 선정 이유를 밝혔다. 서울 노량진의 한 교회에서 새로 촬영한 뮤직비디오에는 모델로 활동중인 한현민이 출연했다.

김범수는 함께 작업하고 싶은 뮤지션으로 나얼과 도끼를 꼽았다. 특히 나얼은 네티즌 사이에선 남자 보컬 4명 ‘김나박이(김범수·나얼·박효신·이수)’ 중 누가 가장 노래를 잘하느냐가 화제일 정도인 라이벌. 김범수는 “나얼과 성격은 정반대지만 서로 영감을 받는 친구 사이”라며 “언젠가 한 번은 함께 노래하고 싶어 끊임없이 구애하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

가장 기억에 남는 순간으론 2011년 MBC ‘나는 가수다’ 출연을 꼽았다. ‘얼굴 없는 가수’로 활동하다 이소라의 ‘제발’을 부르며 이 경연 프로의 황태자로 등극했다. 그는 “그동안 음악에 목소리만 빌려준다고 생각했는데 주인공이 되어 무대를 마치고 박수를 받아본 게 처음이었다”며 “이제는 ‘비주얼 가수’라는 표현도 제법 익숙하다”고 했다.

앞으로의 목표는 두 가지를 언급했다. “50년 동안 노래하는 게 제 목표”라며 “패티김 선생님이 제 롤모델인데 아직 반도 안 왔다”고 말했다. 2001년 2집 타이틀곡 ‘하루’의 영어버전인 ‘헬로 굿바이 헬로(Hello Goodbye Hello)’로 미국 빌보드 ‘핫 싱글 세일즈’ 차트 51위에 올랐던 그는 빌보드 재진입에 대한 각오도 밝혔다. “은퇴할 때까지 절대 포기하지 않는 목표 중 하나”라며 “따로 미국 진출을 계획하는 건 아니지만 가장 한국적인 것이 가장 세계적인 것이라 믿고 지금 자리에서 최선을 다할 것”이라고 말했다.
