CHUNG KYUNG-WHA VIOLIN RECITAL

June 3: The renowned violinist Chung Kyung-wha will be performing pieces from her new album “Beau Soir,” which was released on March 26. Accompanied by American pianist Kevin Kenner, this album contains 12 tracks by three French composers: Faure, Franck and Debussy. This album is her 33rd in her 64-year career as a violinist. For her Korean fans, she will also be playing a special bonus piece, Elgar’s “Salut d’amour,” which is beloved by many Koreans.

DIVA & DIVO CONCERT
Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater
May 31: Acclaimed soprano Jo Su-mi and tenor Roberto Alagna will be performing together to celebrate the Sejong Center’s 40th anniversary. Alagna, who is known as one of the world’s top three tenors, will be returning to Korea for the first time in 10 years. The concert will showcase the beautiful harmonies of opera.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m.

June 2: Yoon Jong-shin is known for his smooth, melodic voice that touches on moments when people reminisce about their past. This concert features the soothing music that comforted Yoon when he felt exhausted and tired.

June 8: The Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova is known as the “Ice Maiden” because of her upright posture and sharp technique. She will be performing Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64,” along with other pieces at her upcoming Seoul Arts Center show. She will be accompanied by Geneva Camerata, who will be making his first appearance in Korea, and conductor David Greilsammer, whose two albums have been selected as Record of the Year by The New York Times.

YANG YOSEOB CONCERT

June 16-17: Singer Yang Yo-seob, formerly of the boy groups Beast and now a member of Highlight, will hold his first-ever solo concert since he debuted in 2009. Yang will be performing songs from his multiple solo releases.
The concert starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

KOREA NATIONAL BALLET: ANNA KARENINA

June 22-24: Based on Leo Tolstoy’s 1877 novel of the same name, this masterpiece will be performed by the Korea National Ballet Company under the supervision of director Kang Sue-jin. The score will be performed by the Korean Symphony Orchestra.
This ballet tells the story of Anna Karenina, a married woman who falls in love with the charming Count Vronsky. Initially, she is reluctant to have an affair, but they eventually begin dating and get caught up. Anna finds herself caught between her obligations as a wife and her desires, and is forced to make a choice.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the weekend.

THE 12 CELLISTS OF THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC CONCERT IN KOREA

June 27: The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, an all-cello ensemble that established themselves in the international music scene, will perform in Seoul this summer. This is the first time in six years for this orchestra to perform once again in Seoul. Known for their unique interpretation of classical, jazz, tango and avant-garde music, the program consists of numerous songs, including Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann’s “As Time Goes By,” “Titanic” and “Lullaby of Birdland.”
The concert starts at 8 p.m.

HARUKI MEETS MASTER OF ANIMATION

July 1: Music inspired by the work of two prominent Japanese artists - novelist Haruki Murakami and animator Hayao Miyazaki - will be performed by the Arts Symphony Orchestra with conductor Ahn Du-hyeon at the helm.
There will be a special performance of American composer Mitch Leigh’s “Impossible Dream,” American musical composer Frank Wildhorn’s “This is the Moment,” American jazz pianist Nat King Cole’s “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas” and Italian musical composer Detto Mariano’s “L’immensita.”
In the second part of the program, eight pieces from composer Joe Hisaishi that have been used in Miyazaki’s films - including “Merry-Go-Round of Life” from “Howl’s Moving Castle” and the ending theme from “My Neighbor Totoro” - will be performed.

To June 3: Directed by David Swan and produced by Shin Chun-soo, this musical is inspired by the Cervantes novel “Don Quixote.”
Alonso Quixano has read many books on chivalry and lost his wits, leading him to roam the country as a knight named Don Quixote de La Mancha.
The musical has received numerous awards, including five Tony Awards and six Korea Musical Awards.

To July 11: Based on Welsh playwright Gary Owen’s play of the same name, this show is a stunning tale of virtual torture and horror. Killology is a popular online game in which players score extra points for torturing their victims in a creative manner. In the story, the game suddenly turns into reality, triggering fear among the people.
Owen was named Best Playwright at the 2018 Wales Theatre Awards for “Killology.” This is the first time the play is being performed in Korea.
The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekends. There are no shows on Mondays.

To July 15: This musical revolves around a brilliant, shy professor who sadly can’t muster up the courage to talk to the girl that he has a crush on. After encountering a vampire while time traveling, the timid professor becomes a charming man. The show will be presented on a stereoscopic stage to highlight the themes of time and space.
Initially, the show was set to wrap up on July 1, but due to its popularity, its run has been extended for two more weeks. The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

To August 5: The second-longest-running American musical on Broadway “Chicago” is returning to local theaters with its upbeat music and flamboyant choreography. Singer Ivy is once again playing the role of Roxie Hart, and the show on June 23 will mark this musical’s 1,000th performance in Korea. The show portrays prison life in a Cook County prison in the 1920s.
There are no shows on Mondays. The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on weekends and national holidays.

THE BANQUET
June 6-9: Twelve traditional Korean dances are combined into one grand performance by the National Dance Company of Korea.
With traditional styles such as a Buddhist dance and janggu (double-headed drum) dance, this performance is choreographed by traditional Korean dancer Cho Heung-don. Acclaimed fashion designer Jung Ku-ho was involved in the costumery. To make the performance more lively and modern, the dancers wear solid colors rather than multicolored hanbok (traditional Korean dress).
The show starts at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays; and 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
