Music festivals are a hot ticket for young Koreans

Music festivals have become some of the most popular cultural events for young Koreans today, and the genre of music being performed doesn’t seem to matter in attracting crowds. People love to enjoy festivals being held outdoors and take the opportunity to check out artists from both home and abroad in one place.

Back in 2000s, there were only a couple of large music festivals that young Koreans went to, such as the Jarasum International Jazz Festival, which began in 2004, and Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, which started in 2006. Today, there are about 30 music festivals held throughout the country.

The response to the festivals are also hot. Blind tickets, or the early bird tickets that get sold prior to the festival’s line-up being revealed, for the “Let’s Rock Festival” which is being held on Sept. 15, opened on May 2 and sold out instantly. One of the most popular music festivals in the country every year is Ultra Music Festival Korea. According to organizers, the number of attendees has increased every year, and they expect to see about 60,000 people per day during the three-day festival this weekend.

The majority of festival-goers in Korea are in their 20s and 30s. EDM, or electronic dance music, festivals are especially popular among younger crowds. According to Interpark, the country’s largest ticketing site, 93.6 percent of ticket buyers for the World DJ Festival were in their 20s and 30s and the figure was 98.5 percent for the Water Bomb Festival last year. Both are EDM festivals.

On the other end of the wild and electrifying EDM festivals stands more tranquil ones like Greenplugged Seoul and the Jarasum Folk Festival, which offer folk and pop acts that are more familiar to Korean audiences. Rock festivals, which started the music festival fever in Korea, however, are seeing a decline. The Jisan Rock Festival, once the most popular rock music festival in the country, will not be held this year.

Festivals are also expanding their reach. Back in the early years of music festivals, most of them were concentrated in Seoul, but today, many are being held outside the capital city. The Island Fest Bomb, a DJ festival, was held on May 19 and 20 on Jeju Island, while the first Okcheon Music Festival, based on folk music and poems, was held in Okcheon, North Chungcheong, for three days beginning May 11. The popular Greenplugged Music Festival, which is held in Seoul in May, has added Gangwon province as its second venue. Greenplugged Donghae will be held at Mangwon Beach for two days starting July 21.

Most festival-goers don’t make their annual visits solely for the music. Many of them in fact visit the festival without knowing much about the artists or their songs, but become fans after seeing them perform.

Park Ji-seon, 28, an employee in Seoul says she attends about two music festivals a year.

“Among the line-up of artists that come to the festival, I honestly know only a couple,” she said. “But I simply go there to enjoy myself, just like I go to waterparks during summer, or clubs on weekends.”

Lee Jeong-min, head of trend analysis firm Trendlab 506, says there’s a reason for this transformation of music festivals here in Korea.

“Music festivals are a perfect event for millenials to enjoy,” Lee said, explaining that big beer brands like Cass and Fitz spend millions to become the main sponsors of these music festivals.

One of the elements of a music festival that is especially appealing to younger crowds is that they are social media friendly, allowing attendees to “look hip,” says Lee, when uploading photographs and videos of themselves enjoying the festival on their Instagram accounts. According to Linkbricks, a firm that specializes in analyzing social media big data, music festival hashtags have increased by nearly 100 percent every year between 2015 to 2017.

Another element is that music festivals provide “experiences” that most millenials regard as important. Festivals offer an escape from the city, an opportunity to showoff their best looks and a day to enjoy the outdoors with friends while listening to great live music.

It is also cost-effective.

“You get to see so many famous artists who may not hold concerts in Korea in one place,” said Kim So-young, 36. “It costs about 100,000 won ($93.55) per day, but because the festivals are held for the whole day, I think it is more economical than other events that end in two to three hours.”

특히 EDM(Electronic Dance Music) 공연에선 압도적이다.
