KT initiated a pilot project to install diagnostic systems on trans-Siberian trains in partnership with the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Russian Railways on Friday.

KT and SNU Bundang Hospital demonstrated a telemedicine system by connecting three hospitals - Russian Railways Scientific Clinic Center in Moscow and two regional hospitals in Tula and Yaroslavl each about 200 to 300 kilometers (124 to 186 miles) away from the capital - marking the beginning of the pilot project.

The project was launched through an agreement between KT and Russian Railways made in December 2017 to cooperate in digital health care.

Russian Railways, one of the three largest rail transportation companies in the world, also operates 173 hospitals across Russia.

Under the pilot project, KT will first establish a telemedicine system that links six hospitals of Russian Railways, one in Moscow and five in distant regions by July.

Then, KT will install telemedicine systems on trans-Siberian trains that connect Moscow and Vladivostok so people on train can be treated by medical staff at the hospitals linked to the rail company.

While a trip between the two cities takes seven days, trains currently only have basic medical devices on board, making it difficult to check passenger conditions in case of emergency. With KT’s new digital health care solution, however, diagnosing diseases with just a small amount of blood and urine will be possible in transit. The results will then be sent off to connected hospitals via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for remote passenger treatment.
